Location: Thredbo, NSW, Australia		I have an old 1614 that I just got that has a concave neck.

I've loosened the truss rod and it is still a couple of millimetres down in the centre.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've searched the OFC, and saw a mention of clamping the neck to straighten it, but don't want to try that without some advice.

Hopefully the photos will show what I’m talking about. The straight edge is on the first and last (18th) fret.

You realize that you Tighten the truss-rod the make it pull towards the back... not loosen it.




So... That does look like you have a little bow (relief)...
But you are supposed to have a bit of relief.

So tighten that truss rod back... In slow increments.
Do force it. Good Luck.

My thinking was backwards.

I've tightened it, but I still get a lot of fret buzz. I'll try it over a few days and see how it goes. I'll make a few small adjustments to let it settle in.

Location: Thredbo, NSW, Australia		I bought a USB camera and took some internal pics.

There have been some previous unsuccessful repairs made. It looks like there are three additional braces added in these repairs, with two having failed.

You can see two additional braces in the first pic (40), with one that has broken away.

The second pic (41) shows an original brace that has cracked.

The third pic (42) shows the crack in the top from the inside.

Pics 4 to 6 (43 to 45) show an original brace, at least I think its original, near the sound hole that has come away.

Location: Thredbo, NSW, Australia		Two more pictures showing the outside of the top of the guitar.

It has sunking in quite a bit between the bridge and the soundhole, and a bit less between the bridge and the end of the guitar.

You can see the crack between the bridge and the soundhole.

The yellow line is where I'm thinking of adding a new brace glued to the side of the broken main X-brace.

I've made an adjustable spacer out of a bolt that I can use to temporarily set the top (soundboard) in the correct position when I glue the new brace in.

I'm now wondering what glue to use. Suggestions anyone?

Location: Sydney, Australia		If you're planning a Brissie trip, I'd get The Wizz to have a look at that. He did wonders with my Adamas, for an amazing price.

Too many braces may dampen the tone. It might be possible to remove and replace the broken ones.

I don't have any plans to go to Brisbane.

I take your point though about too many braces.

It'll be a while before I actually attempt a repair. I'm still researching and looking for suggestions at the moment.
