Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | I had the supreme pleasure of attending Leo's performance in our small-venue performance hall on Tuesday. I hadn't seen him since 1978, at the Greek Theatre, on the UC-Berkeley campus, in 1978, playing warm-up for Linda Ronstadt. That was a good outing, to be sure.
Well, Maestro Kottke hasn't lost his licks, or his raconteur skills, in the past 35 years. Still bounds like a gazelle over the fretboard, and tireless. I figure, anybody who plays a "Bozo", better be damn good, or damn funny. He's got both nailed.
To wit, tuning the 12-string, "It's just an opinion."
"I'm not supposed to be having this much fun, this early in the set."
SWMBO: "Why don't you play like that?!"

Location: Fort Worth, TX | I saw him almost 40 years ago at Indiana University while I was attending there. He was the opening act for Loggins and Messina. Apparently, their plane was an hour late getting into town. The crowd was restlessly and loudly complaining about it by the time Leo walked out. He sat down, strummed a chord and said "is that too loud?". The resounding "NO" could've lifted the roof off. I still remember that concert vividly and the years it took me afterwards to stop looking at my guitars as suitable kindling wood. |
