| G'day Guys,
is anyone out there using the MBox 2 to record? looking at getting one second hand but don't know if it works with OSX 10.8 and Garageband.
Can't get a straight answer from the web!

I just bought a Presonus Audiobox 22VSL and I'm REALLY happy with it. I think I paid $230 for it.
The included Studio One software is waaay better than GarageBand. Bit of a learning curve, but the Presonus forum is a pretty welcoming and helpful resource.
Get an Apple Camera Connection Kit and you can use it as an interface on an iPad too. I'm mucking about with 'Loopy' at the moment and its the best app I've EVER bought. |

Location: Jet City | Aussie, your topic says DAW, but that typically refers to software. The MBox is an interface.
If you're asking if the interface will work with your OS and GB, I'm pretty sure it does. You may need to do a work-around on the installation of drivers. Here's a link to all that stuff....

| Thanks guys, appreciate the help. Might look at the audio box as its about $150 for a second hand mbox2 with postage anyway.
Being a novice, I assume you can plug the XLR output of my ovation straight into XLR input of the audiobox?

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | Yup. And it sounds great. The preamps on the 22VSL are better than the cheaper Presonus USB interface. Still 2 in 2 out but if I can notice the difference between preamps, anyone can. 2nd hand M Box for $150 or new AudioBox for $230 - it's a no brainer. If money's a problem (or lack of it) the USB version, not the VSL version, can be had for under $200, but I think the VSL's preamps are worth the extra $$$. BTW, before anyone jumps in, these are Aussie dollars I'm talking about.

| Sounds exactly what i'm looking for!
Seems a no brainer to me too. I had a look overseas, where you can get them cheaper but price turns out the same after shipping so no point, unless i look at something like the bundle offers that have 2 good mics and case plus the 22VSL for $260 (but can make an offer). |

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | Hey Banjo, I've been kicking myself for not getting the 44VSL. So if you're interested, I could sell you my 1 month old 22VSL. Can't lay my hand on the receipt at the moment, but I'm pretty sure the shop would give me a copy.
Main reason I want the 44VSL (apart from the extra 2 inputs) is that its not bus powered - it has an external power supply.
The bus powered 22VSL requires a powered USB hub if used with an iPad as the iPad can't provide enough juice. Not a problem if you're running it into a MacBook or desktop 'poota though. With the setup im trying to achieve, having to rely on a USB hub is one extra connection that could potentially come unplugged.
No pressure. Just thought it might be a way for us both to get what we want.

| I muzza,
I hadn't thought of the powering issue when using the iPad, as that is something i would love to do. Just bought a nice stand to hold the iPad (like a mic stand, height adjustable and goose neck for ultimate flexibility in positioning) and was hoping to utilise the 22VSL at some point. Maybe i should rethink my strategy.
Let me have a think about what i really want to achieve as that will direct me in the right direction.

Purchased 31/1/13.
Just to clarify, it DOES work with the iPad, and works very well. You just need a powered USB hub.
I've also made an aluminum frame/box that will hold the Audiobox on the mic stand. I'll throw in for you too. |

| The MBOX 2 is a pretty decent interface for the money, however starting with Pro Tools 9 you no longer need Avid's proprietary hardware in order to load the software. The Presonus devices are a cheaper alternative, which in my experience tend to have nicer preamps, less clocking/sync issues, and solid A/D and D/A converters. I have an Apogee Ensemble in the studio I run interfacing with Pro Tools HD 9, but that may be overkill for what you're trying to accomplish. |

| Also, keep in mind that any interface you buy (for the most part) that is bus powered (gets its power from the USB port instead of a traditional power cable) tends to have a harder time getting a lot of gain out of the preamps. This can be especially problematic when using a dynamic mic that needs a significant amount of gain to function properly (like a Shure SM7B or EV RE-20). You'll have to compensate for this in your DAW, which will raise your noise floor considerably. |
