Location: Cedar Lake, IN USA | I remember a few years back, before they revamped their web site, Ovation posted production numbers of their collectors editions. I think it was a PDF file. I can't seem to find it anymore. Would someone by chance have downloaded that document, and could you post it? Thanks |

Location: sitting at my computer | however... if you happen to be lookin' up a 1617 (Legend)... the crack-the-code 4 Digit Series page lists it as a Glen Campbell Artist Balladeer, which obviously it ain't. 1627's and 1127's are GC Artist models and 1618's are GC 12 strings, none of which are shown to be a Balladeer. ??? http://www.ovationguitars.com/search/c168e2e718d1df8ee93cd5c0b302598d Perhaps the Deluxe Balladeer was renamed (briefly) GC Artist Balladeer and then later changed to Legend when the 1627 GC Artist model came along??? I have a 2006 Collectors, no issue with that serial number, but I have both 1986 6-string and 12-strings. The serial number for the 6 string is 20nn, and the production numbers say they made 1858, and the 12 string serial number is 4nn, and the production numbers say they made 392. There must have been some method to their madness when they came up with the serial number scheme. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | The serial numbers are just numbers used in production, not based on model. They can be narrowed to a range used in a specific year, but that's it. ALL guitars in that year are in that range. For numbered guitars, I believe the numbers go on the neck rather early in the operation. If something happens in the long process afterwards so the guitar is not built, I do not believe they revisit the number, so almost always, there will be higher serial than the guitars built. The exception seems to be 1 of xx Not sure how they do it, but those are right and usually just very short runs.
Someone else may have more info, this is just my observation. |
