Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Most of you will remember the story of this guitar: I bought it early last summer after following it on EBay for a week and winning the bid at $302. It was filthy, needing a complete cleaning and polish; new strings; the case needed Brillo pad cleaning; and there was Formica duck taped under the epi’s as a sort of homemade feedback system. After cleaning I had a beautiful guitar: I took it to the Ashville Southern OFC Jam where it was a very popular guitar. It had two small cracks on either side of the bridge,some road rash on the headstock tip, and a small indent on the bass side of the neck and I decided to have it restored to its former glory. I sent it to the Mothership and J.B. and Co. got to work…that was in late October. I got it back two days ago. There were some problems because they don’t offer the -6p paint anymore and in trying to get it right it just never would work out. In looking around the factory, a complete bowl and top assembly was found in a box sitting on a shelf: you guessed it: in white pearl! The last -6p 1758 made! It has the hinged battery box where the original had the screw internal mount but I actually like this better. Brand new OP-24 electronics that sound wonderful. The neck was fixed and refinished and plays like the preverbial "butta". It tuned right up and sounds awesome: as it did before but maybe even better. Of course the frets were polished and the fingerboard was cleaned. In short, I have a brand new guitar! The label and serial number were transferred from the old bowl and top assembly and the result is stunning. These pic’s will have to do until warmer weather when I can get outside for better ones. I cannot thank John and Co. for their fantastic effort, dedication, persistence, and expertise. I have a huge history with this guitar (one just like it) dating back to 1988 and with the matching mint condition 1868-6p I found on the Bay last September, what a fabulous set of Elite’s. It would be nice but I sincerely doubt it will sell for that much: that said it is one of the best playing and sounding Ovations I have ever played. I owned a black one for 15 years while looking for a white one: it took me 17 years to find a nice one then found another one in nearly as nice condition for Arnaud in France. Been a few on the bay in the past two years but so far none nicer than the one I bought last year for $600. It is minty!
BTW: the 1758 looks so bright because of the pearl in the new white paint: I had a difficult time not getting flash reflection in the pic's. The mothership did a fabulous job! |
