I recently stopped by a local guitar center and they were demonstrating this BOSS DR-880 drum machine. It sounds very real on the drum with bass plus the guitar effects.
I just wonder if anyone of you use this equipment now and what is your input on this unit?

Location: North Carolina | We use the DR 770, but do not program it. One of our people plays it live. It sounds great through the PA, and it's never too loud. (Plus it does not have a girlfriend who wants to sing) |

Location: Scotland | I've neber been a fan of Boss drum machines. The sounds are pretty good but they're a pain to program. I tried the new Alesis SR18 at NAMM. An updated version of the SR16, which is a classic that's been in production since 1990.

Location: Jet City | I've used the DR-5 for about 15 years. The sounds are amazing.
That 880 is the first product to come along that I've thought about upgrading to. Again Roland put some killer sounds in it.
The learning curves are a bit steep, but once you've got it down, it's not too bad.
Here's a sample of what can be done with these things. Aside from my guitars and her vocals, I did the rest on a DR-5.

Location: Jet City | BTW, I wouldn't classify the DR-5 or 880 as a drum machine. It's a rhythm section. Bass, keyboards, horns, drums, whatever.
That clip above is all DR-5, including the bass. The only other instruments are an electric guitar and an acoustic. |

Now that I have my newer Mac based setup I need to get busy and do some higher quality stuff. |

It really depends on what you're doing, and how detailed. I still don't understand all my DR-5 is capable of especially the whole MIDI info stuff and controlling other MIDI instruments, or having other MIDI instruments control it etc.
To put down some drums, and some bass and some of whatever else though isn't to hard, then you just hit play.
As for how long it takes to tap a song it, that depends too. You could take pre-made patterns and edit use them, edit them, or make your own from scratch.
I can use premade patterns and put a whole song together in 20-30 minutes. Usually if I'm recording though, I do most from scratch. Those songs I kept hearing a steady Bonham style beat in my head, and I could find anything close that made me happy. There are a couple of fills that took me 15 or 20 minutes to input. I'm very fond of the drum fill right before the lead in Windows of my Soul.
Sometimes I use it for composition, so I'll just run a canned drum track for a beat, then start tapping bass or piano or whatever over it. I can do that quick too. |

Location: Miami | I purchased a ZOOM RT 223 beginning of this month, and I run my GC178 LX through it, and then into a Fender Acoustasonic 30 - sounds great!
I was initially freaking out trying to program it, but once I got the hang of it, it was cool.
Have not tried the BOSS, but after reading several reviews, I decided on the ZOOM.
