. . . or any other small, inexpensive, accessible guitar that can be kept handy next to your desk in the office, lab, etc., is for those moments that arise a few times everyday where you’ll hear something on the jukebox that you want to repeat or work out on the fretboard. Reach over, grab the Traveler, work out the lick or riff, put it back, then return to your normal life.  For me and this purpose, the Traveler works perfectly and I couldn’t be happier with it. No amp, no cords, no hassle, just a dinky little guitar with a full-size fretboard that I can grab, hammer away on, and return to its stand, the entire process taking no more than a few seconds, without disrupting anybody in the adjacent office.  I think any small electric would do the trick, but the Traveler is ideal because it is diminutive and fits anywhere.  I need the fretboard, not the tone, and this one is almost nothing but fretboard. Anybody else have something like this at the ready and use it for this purpose?

Prof...I have a Yamaha Silent nylon. It has an active pickup that can be heard through ear phones or plugged into an amp..or nothing at all. It breaks down nicely to be a really small and easy carry on in flights. Picked it up used for 275.Yamaha Silent Guitar

First time I met Bobbo, he was plucking one while a passenger travelling across Idaho. Great practice tools.

I got mine...

These got little "PocketRockit" headphone amps built-in.
And I do plug them into a MicroCube and play them outside.

Yup. I have one just like Prof's (but with a Pao Ferro fretboard, not Maple). Great little unit for sitting in cars, airplanes, trains, etc when you want to play and a full scale neck and fretboard are important. I have a Korg Pandora PX4 headphone amp/rhythm box which hooks onto the strap or your belt so you can really hear what you're playing if you're so inclined. Everything fits into a nice little travel bag.

I've got one - similar to the one on the right in OMA's photo, but the acoustic guitar version. Great for practicing at night when you don't want to disturb anyone. Also brilliant for taking on that trip - whether by car or plane. Really robust unit, great action, light and takes up very little space. If you don't have one of these, you're probably missing out.

I guess I just don't get it.

In a car I'm always driving, aside from that, travel is usually in a plane and i can barely fit my fat *** into a seat on it's own, let alone space to play an instrument. And once I got to where I was going, a silent guitar isn't going to do much for me either. If I'm at home, well... I think I'll pick up a real guitar off the wall.

Believe me, I WANT to find reasons why I need to buy a new guitar, but I couldn't justify buying one of these for myself.

I'm mostly driving in the car, but if it's full of junk, a hard shell Ovation case takes up a lot of room, so I often won't take it. The Traveler fits into all sorts of tight spaces and I'm way less worried about it being stolen (it cost a lot less) than one of my Ovations. As it's all solid, it's a lot more robust to changes in temperature that might occur in a locked car. You can use the headphone output to plug it into any number of devices that will make noise without needing a guitar amp. You'll NEVER get asked to put your Traveler in the hold if you fly.

I used to travel by air lots for 5-6 hour stretches at a time, sometimes up to 12. Since I traveled so much, I usually got moved up front where the seats are a bit more spacious ... these guitars fit real well in that situation. And totally easy to carry-on with no issues whatsoever. It was always my "personal item". With the Pandora, I could always have a guitar wherever I was and play what/when I wanted. In fact, the main melody line in Carmelo was written with the Traveler using the strat-style pickup through the Pandora on a Deluxe Reverb setting with a simple surf drum track ... in a hotel room with headphones on! I've even plugged into an amp and played live with others and it was surprisingly OK.

Been thinking about something like this for a long time, but don't have a place at work to play even a silent one. Therefore I was figuring I'd have to go with something completely carbon-fiber (Like a Cargo or something) that could sty full-time in the car, without having to worry about heat or cold. Looked at Emerald, Cargo, Rainsong, etc. Everything like that, however, is too expensive for the moment.

Although I don't keep it there, the Traveler actually fits in my top desk drawer. There just aren't very many guitars that will do that.

You've almost got me taking mine to work just to try that. I'm 99% sure it won't fit, but that 1% ...

I've just ordered a Taylor GS Mini. Over at the Acoustic Guitar Forum, everyone raves about it, so I tried one at GC and was highly impressed with its sound. It sounds almost like a full sized guitar - and probably as full as my SSB Ovations.

I don't really have a specific use in mind, but many years ago I had a 3/4" scale Applause and loved playing it.

Congrats. Always nice to have a new toy. FWIW, the Acoustic Guitar Forum is the unofficial Taylor guitar forum so I always take a grain of salt when reading posts there. Same way people ought to expect what they get when we talk about Ovations over here.

I love my Traveler acoustic version, I even perform with it occasionally. It comes with its own built-in opening joke: "They asked if I could come tonight and play a little guitar...." Tip your waitresses, try the veal.

I have a travel sized guitar with nylon strings. I NEVER travel, but it has come in handy nevertheless. When Jay was in the hospital and too weak to wrap his arms around a full sized guitar, he could play this one. Another friend had open heart surgery and borrowed this small guitar because HE couldn't wrap his arms around a full sized guitar either. My friend Kelly borrowed it for a while when she was sick too.

I was lucky enough to pick up an Applause AA-10. I've taken it on a couple of trips. About 2 years ago it went with me to Pittsburgh, Washington DC, back to Wichita. I was stopped by security twice: once in the Wichita airport and again in the Pittsburgh bus terminal because they thought I was carrying a gun case. I can't complain though. The guitar fit nicely into the airplane overhead. I was just worried that someone might try to cram a large case in on top and crush it. I'll make it a point to stow it last on future trips.

I bought my Traveler guitar when I was out in Las Vegas and have carried it with me to Hawaii, on cruises in the Carribeans and back to Vegas. You can plug in the headphones or run it through an amp. It's a great traveling companion and fits in the overhead compartments of planes without a hassle. I've even brought it with me to gigs for a backup. I've had mine now for several years and never regretted buying it.
