Location: Chicago | Many of us are loyal to LPs we "bonded with" as kids. But "loyal" does not mean "listen to frequently." My question is: which of these (say, 20-40-year old records) are still in ACTIVE rotation at home? What are your top FIVE from back in the day that have not faded away? For example, I don't reach for Led Zeppelin any more, but the Allmans "Fillmore" is still "active." I also reach for McLaughlin's "My Goal's Beyond" (1970) and Chick Corea "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" (1968). Love the "Very Best of Donovan" and Beatles "Sgt. Pepper".... |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Haven't played an LP in at least 10 years.. but I guess that's probably not the point. Rarely listened or listen to whole albums unless they were Greatest Hits as few if any artists can keep my attention that long. For me it's just easier to say that any playlist I have made in the past 30 years has had Blue Oyster Cult on it because they have new music every few years since the 70's. Other artists get popped into rotation and some tend to stick. Depending on my mood of course, Queensryche, Foo Fighters, Chicago, Doors, Huey Lewis, Eagles, Carpenters, Harry Chapin, Sammy Hagar, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots and Guns & Roses. Obviously some of these artists didn't show up until the 80's or 90's but other than these, just whatever sounds good to me at the moment. Some of the above groups get into rotation because of the artists, not necessarily the group. I like Sammy Hagar no matter the group so it might be his solo stuff, Chickenfoot, or Van Halen. I like Dave Grohl so it might be Foo Fighters or Nirvana, etc..
So to answer your question, because for me it's never been about albums but more about tunes... since I started listening to music there's been this master playlist that gets a tune added to it once in awhile. I think I have about 50 tunes and they span The Carpenters, Neal Diamond and Harry Chapin era's through 40 years of Blue Oyster Cult to the Foo Fighters and Garbage of today.

Some groups more than others.
But the one band that has been a constant, is The WHO.

I have not missed a Detroit show since 1970 and yesterday I just got tickets for the November 24 show.
.
With the death of the album format and the logarithmic fragmentation of music marketing today, things will never be the same as back in those Golden Years.

Location: Sydney, Australia | Most of my CD collection fits into my iPhone, so the rotation is a bit random because I mostly shuffle. However, Who's Next by The Who is a diamond (This was my first LP, bought in 1972). More recently, I bought the deluxe version which has an extra CD of live versions and other songs - this is an absolute must for Who fans. Little Feat is another that seems to hold well with age, as are Pink Floyd. I was a big fan of Led Zeppelin, but tend to hit the skip button a lot when they appear in shuffle. |

I could go back 30+ and name off a few, but there were some pretty AWESOME records coming out 20 years ago, and I was still pretty impressionable in my mid to late 20's. That coupled with moving out to Seattle at a time where all eyes were turning to what was coming out of this region opened my ears up to a whole new world of music.
I'll put up Pearl Jam's Ten. Nearly half the album hit the charts, and I bet most would be on Mr. O's playlist too. I mean just look at the first 8 tracks...
