| Hey folks!
Had a quick question...(or more just confirming my guess.:-p) I have two 1627s, one with the GC truss rod cover and one without. I'm guessing the only difference in the two is that the earlier one had the truss rod adjustable at the headstock, and the later one has the K bar. Is that the only differences between the two years?

Location: SoCal | The top bracing is probably different. The one with the trc is probably older (unless it is a recent reissue) and has the VT bracing pattern. The one w/o the trc is probably A braced. They sound different? Which do you prefer? Also, they should have different preamps...... |

Thanks for the info! They definitely have different preamps. The older one (TR cover) sounds a little fuller to me. Not sure if that's from the different bracing, or just because it's an older guitar and has been played more and is a little more opened up. :-)

| The older one has the old style preamp, where it's just the single volume knob. The newer one has the 3 band EQ with the volume knob right in with the EQ system. The reason I was asking was I wanted to get another one, and was wondering if the general consensus was to buy an older or new model.:-) |

Location: Right now? | I don't know which one you should buy, but I'd go for the A-braced. I have a few guitar with A bracing, and they sound truly beautiful. Everytime I pick up my 1617 I am just bowled over by the almost perfect sound of that guitar. It's a "WOW" every time.

Location: SoCal | TBone, there's no real answer as to which guitar is better. You prefer the guitar with the older VT bracing. I'm with Willa in that I prefer the A braced guitars. But it's your ear that you have o please so get what you like.
If you have one of each now, why get a third? |

| I'm looking for another one because my "old" one is really beat...two top cracks have been repaired over the years and there's third one sprouting up, so I think it's time to retire the ol' boy and get another. :-)

It sits in the living room and is played daily at our house. Just had the frets dressed out about a month ago. And it has a sound to die for. Willie Nelson would be proud to tour with this guitar (as a prop, bob). Your 1627 is just getting broke in...it will probably outlast you... |

| Jay, you're probably right! LOL It does sound fantastic...it'll always be my "go-to" when I'm recording or just pickin' and a-grinnin' around the house. I just don't want to continue subject it to the large amount of outdoor summer gigs, tiki bar gigs etc. It's got a lot of sentimental value, so I might be able to rest a little easier knowing the ol boy won't get subjected to 103 degreee tempertures anymore. Like my gigs this weekend will be! :-) |

Location: Des Moines, Iowa | I know I'm pretty late in attending this party, but too much said here that I have to comment on. First off, "jay" it sounds like I'm not the only one with an old primo vintage Ovation with a crack or two in it that I think sounds great. I've got a 1979 year 1651 Legend LTD that has a fairly long crack from the tail up to the bridge, but I've never noticed it detracting one bit from the guitar's sound. I actually gave that one to my son this last Christmas - vintage Ovation hard case and all, but then not more than a month later I found someone selling the exact same year and model that was even worse for wear, so I had to buy it.
I do love the old Legends and 1979 is as old as I've had, but if I found an older one in ANY shape, well.. I'd probably tap my savings and spend way more for it than I maybe should. Hey, I got the 1651 Legend LTD fix-er-upper for $150 and it just needs a new bridge and a long open crack filled and repaired, but I'm going to go all out and have the top stripped and refinished and the gold plated tuners are way too worn, so I think I'll replace those, too. |
