Woah now... that's not so petty Petty larceny!

Nice finish on the Dusenberg. Makes me think of a '63 Chevy 'vette!

Stealing someone else's guitar. That's just sad. I would NEVER do something like that!

ah, stonebobbo? Can you send me your address? I want to send you a birthday card :-)

Very angry to hear this. The key to their recovery is determination. We have the resources available today that make getting them back a good possibility, unless the ultimate destination is a dishonest collector who hides them away forever.

Don't wait for the police to handle it. Get involved and make things happen right away. I recovered two stolen Ovations starting with a simple post in the OFC.

That's awful. I've seen TP and the HBs probably four or five times over the years, and its always a showcase of beautiful classic instruments that leave you drooling. Hope they get em all back...

Reading about all these stolen guitars lately made me wonder - Why isn't there a GPS trackable anit-theft device (like LoJack) for guitars? Well, some internet searching revealed that the continuous power requirements and the device's size (i.e. lack of conceal-ability) were the two main hurdles at the moment. No doubt some bright person will eventually figure it out though. I did find a company / service that has scannable chips (similar to those used for recovering lost pets) that might help return some stolen items to their owners. http://www.snagg.com/faq.htm However, it's dependent upon the pawn shop or buyer having the item scanned, but at least it's something... especially if you've got a guitar worth thou$ands at risk. An insurance policy might be a good idea too. Careful, it's a jungle out there!

I would hope that these instruments were insured, but still it's a shame that they are no longer in the possession of their rightful owners. It seems that they would have had these collectible guitars cloned for stage use instead of using the real thing and take a chance of them being damaged or stolen. I hope they are recovered for the guys. This is the reason I don't bring my vintage guitars to gigs where I can't be with them at all times.

Seems I read somewhere a while back when Petty was asked that question he said that instruments were meant to be played.

Well then, I hope the thieves are playing them. We want Mr. Petty to be happy.

There was a story in the news a little while back (may have even come across it here) about a guy in Vermont that had his late brother's Telecaster stolen from him. His brother had passed away from a brain tumor, but was able to hang out with Pearl Jam for a while when he was sick, and they all autographed the guitar and gave it to him. It obviously meant a lot to his brother, and was his prized possession. The story wound up in national news, and just before Christmas the guy gets a package delivery from Fender Musical Instruments. Turns out Pearl Jam heard about this, remembered the kid from years before, and sent his brother another Telecaster signed by all of them. Nice to see a good thing come of a bad situation, those guys are a class act apparently.

Just heard this morning that it was an inside job - duh. It so happened to be the Security Guard. What kind of security is it if the guard rips you off?

"Ex Government employee"

Not necessarily. A lot of the venues hire off-duty. Some cops have been fairly successful crooks.

Can't judge all jobs by the bad apples, Security, Law Enforcement, Military, every job out there has those types of people that just think of themselves, I hope they string the bum up by his thumbs with the E strings of the guitars he stole. Way to go Culver City Police Dept.

Here's a great little device that can deter thieves. A small chip can be embedded in an inconspicuous place on your instrument(s). I believe Carvin has been using this device on all of their custom shop guitars. It's called a Snagg, here's a link: http://www.snagg.com/ Certainly can't hurt to have extra protection. Especially on your favorite instruments.
