Last night the wife and I were watching TV and we hear a very loud POW!  It was like someone had just fired a .22.  It took us a minute to figure out what happened and assess the damage to our underwear, but finally discovered that the Duracell 9V battery I removed from my 08C earlier and had set on the table next to me had the bottom blown out of it.  I picked it up and looked it over and set it back down.  About a hour later, after our heart rate had finally slowed down, it popped again with a POW!  I picked it up and carried it outside to set it on the sidewalk and just as I pulled my hand back, POW!  It did it a third time.  Over the course of the night 4 of the 6 cells erupted and a 5th one looks like it tried to.  I called Duracell today and am happy to report they're sending me a coupon for a replacement battery.  Oh goody!  They also told me not to use batteries after the date marked on the side (this one showed March 2011 but had only been in the guitar for about a month).  That's a good reason NOT to buy batteries in bulk.

I've seen this once before with a Duracell 9V in #41, but I didn't actually hear it go off.  If this had happened while it was installed in my 08C I wonder what damage it would have done to the electronics.  Fortunately the battery clip in #41 doesn't enclose the back end of the battery.

Anyone else experience anything like this?  Do I need to register my guitar with the BATF?

Nick, it would appear someone is out to get you and/or your guitars. A mini IED by the looks of it, good thing this attempt has failed.

I would remain vigilant.

MiSi website

Ain't exactly cheap, but it'd eeeeventually pay for itself... and 8 hrs playtime on a 60 second charge!!

Not sure if it could be fitted to an O preamp though.

SOB, Those "battery-free" devices have energy storage cells. You quick-charge them before use. Aren't' energy cells at their greatest risk during recharge?

according to them it's a "super capacitor" not a rechargeable battery...

"super capacitor"... I've never had a battery explode, but was recently on the receiving end of a capacitor blowing in a UPS. The UPS is exposed at waist height on Lady Noah's mobile articulating PC cart. I was innocently dusting behind it. Maybe it was coincidence, maybe it was triggered by static. It sounded like a 22 cal. A little flame (like from the super lighter we light the bbq with) shot out the top-rear vent, followed by a little acrid smoke. The tech at the UPS's manufacturer said, sounds like a cap... they go out with a brief little fiery display, but don't worry, they are self extinguishing, there was really no danger They quickly sent us out an advance replacement.

Now... do I want my guitar preamp running off a Duracell 9V or a capacitor?

I like phantom power. I've heard of 9volts blowing like Nick's, but only if they were damaged or shorted.
