I have a bad rotator cuff on my strumming side and my dreadnaught is killing me. I've always loved the feel of the Ovation necks- the action and the shape, but never needed an acoustic electric. Now I find myself playing my electric unplugged when I just feel like sitting on the couch and noodling.

I'd like to get a good value-priced acoustic that has a neck shape and action similar to my electric. I don't want anything deeper than a mid-cut bowl. At the same time, I want something that will sing pretty well without plugging it in.

I know I can find a comfortable Ovation, but can I find one that will sound good unplugged and won't break the bank. What about other acoustics, are there ANY worthy of mention here? ;)

I'd like to stay somewhere around $500-600. I'm not good enough to wring the value out of something more dear.

Here's a link to My Shallow Bowl Legend, shipped for under $600

Good luck in your search. :D

I noticed that blue beauty. How's the unplugged sound on the shallow bowl- warm, bright, mellow, muted, etc.? That's a very unusual finish, I don't know that I've ever seen one like it

Very nice guitar at a very good price. Shallow bowl Legends don't have the volume of the mid or deep bowls but still sound really good. They are great guitars to sit on the couch and noodle with. I don't know of any other guitar which is as confortable to play while sitting on a couch. The plugged in sound is indistinguishable from any other Ovation with the same p/u and pre-amp.

There is a noticeable lack of bass in the shallow bowls, but it seems less noticeable to my ears in the mid and upper ranges. Grab Patch's, unless you can't stand blue. That's a pretty good price for a Legend.

OM or 00 sized guitars would also be a good choice. Dave

I couldn't have said it any better myself. As Mark also says, the bass suffers a little acoustically, however it's definitely there. For practicing quietly and "noodling", it's tough to beat these. I often take a shallow bowl to practice at my church, and it holds its own just fine even unplugged.

For those times when you need to be substantially less than quiet, plug it in. It'll hold its own against anything out there.

I can have it in your hands next week if you let me know in time to ship tomorrow. ;)

I was once an owner of a shallow bowl legend. They're not as loud as a mid to deep bowl Ovation, but they definitely have a very sweet sound and tone. Plugged in, the guitar comes alive and the skies the limit. I had a very fruitful partnership with it, in the brief period that it stayed in my possession. When the opportunity to own a deep bowl CL came into sight, I didn't think twice.

Though I didn't regret making the switch from shallow bowl CL to deep bowl, I still miss that guitar to this day...

buy a satin-finish woodbox. they're noticeably louder than those with gloss finish, because of smaller amount of paint, and since they're easier to do they should be cheaper. I've bought a satin-finish Furch D40CM 2 weeks ago and i'm extremely pleased with this guitar.

My daughter has a shallow bowl Elite T. It has a much better sound...especially in the bass dept., than any other shallow bowl I've heard. She got it on Ebay for $400.

You'd get the fast neck you're looking for and a great sound to boot.

Shallow bowls can usually be found a bit cheaper, but if you want a very nice full sound, you may be disappointed with anything less than a mid depth bowl. I've seen Custom Legends go between $5-600. If you don't drop below that $600 mark, there will be lots of opportunities on nice guitars. I just saw a decent Balladeer go in Ebay (with a case) for $165. My advice (for what it's worth) is to TAKE YOUR TIME and discover the many different Ovation guitar options available, than after you decide what you REALLY want, start shopping.

I find it ironic that my Legend gets more attention on this post than the actual for sale post. :D

Last Sunday I picked up a '76 1612-1 Custom Balladeer I purchased on eBay for $150. It's a steal for a buck fifty.

Even with the old strings it projects a rich full balanced sound. I'm very impressed with this vet!

Thanks to all for sharing your knowlege. After 3 weeks of test-driving a lot of different guitars, I went with a Parkwood PW370M. It's a solid spruce/mahogany concert body with a cutaway and Fishman electronics. It was a great fit and has just the right voice for my purposes- a very mellow, honeyed tone. I haven't put it down since I got it (my fingers are sore!), and my playing has improved 100%.

71sx, I was just reading your thread and I was going to suggest a Parkwood. I have the 320 Jumbo Solid Maple back and sides with solid spruce top. Thinner then your normal Jubo but very brite and lots of volume. Is it a Martin or Taylor no, but for the price you got a Solid wood guitar. Enjoy!!!.
