I am the original owner of a Legend 1717 from 1985. I didn't notice the strings buzzing until I connected it the my amp just recently. Then it was very noticable. I put new strings on it. Still buzzing. Picked up a new set at Guitar Center and mentioned it to the clerk. He said I may need to adjust the truss rod. Well, I tried but could not adjust the rod either way. It has the Kaman Rod. Wouldn't budge. I was hoping someone would have an idea why the rod is locked up and maybe have a suggestion of what I can do. Thanks guys.

Hi 1949, Welcome to the group. First of all, make sure you're turning the Kaman bar adjuster and not the neck bolts. This diagram isn't the exact model, but the neck attachment should be the same.

Welcome ... nice guitar. Before we get too far along, it would be good to know how experienced you are with adjusting truss rods and the action. We can point you to some primers if that would help. It may be a case of needing a shim or two rather than a truss rod tweak. It would be good to get an idea of the situation.

Not familiar at all with the truss. I know there are two bolts holding the neck. And the truss rod is located just behind a wooden hole. I used an allen wrench that fit pretty well. Just couldn't turn it. I also know there are shims under the bridge. The buzzing happens with them in or out. I took them out to lower the action using a quarter on the 12th fret. Strings are still just a little bit higher than the quarter with the shims out. Plays better though. Maybe I'll try heavier strings. Also noticed a little wear on the first two frets. Could that be an issue?

You may already know all of this, but there are 3 points to consider when adjusting the action (this is assuming the frets are level).
1) String height at 12th fret - adjusted at the bridge.
2) String height at the 1st fret - adjusted at the nut.
3) Relief at the 8th fret - adjusted with the truss rod.
The problem is, if you adjust one you can affect another.

As a starting point, check the truss rod by fretting the guitar at the 1st and 12th (some say 14th) fret and check the clearance at the 8th fret. It should only be a few thousandths (.002" to .020" depending on the person you ask). If it's considerably more or less than that then the truss needs adjustment and since the adjustment nut is frozen, I'd recommend you take it to a luthier for a setup. That's a nice guitar and a setup should only be about $40.00.
