Hi folks,

I'm new to playing guitars and have recently acquired a well loved 1978 1612-4 Custom balladeer.

Among the things it needs are refretting, a new nut, and a new saddle. I've already adjusted the action and replaced the strings after spending a few days rehydrating it.

I removed a couple shims from the saddle, and reduced the bow, and five out of six strings sound awesome. the B string due to a combination of the saddle and the nut being worn down.

I bought a set of new frets and and am practicing on a piece of junk Yamaha I got at the salvation army.

My questions are, I hope, simple.

1. Are their factory replacement parts available for the nut and saddle?

2. I'm getting the impression that bone is the material of choice for the nut and saddle, if I have to make new parts, what should I be looking for as far as size.

3. Is there anything else I should know but don't know enough to ask?

Yes...Ovation should be able to help you out with the nut and saddle.

I've ordered replacement nuts directly from Ovation and have received both man-made and bone, depending on the application. They say, "bone gets you tone," but I don't know that my ears can tell a difference. If you build your own nut, you'll probably need to start with 3/16" stock. The saddle should be 1/8".

Don't screw up. :)
If you're not already familiar with them, www.stewmac.com has lots of information online.

Welcome to the group and good luck with your project.
