Being a relative novice with Craig's list, how does one search for items nationally. I can only seem to do searches on an individual city basis?

Wow. less than a minute apart. Mine's prettier, though.

use www.craigshelper.com , adjust the slider under where it says Where to Search to limit the distance.

Alternatively, enclose your search keywords within quote marks followed by the words:

in site:craigslist.org

in a google search. For example

"ovation 1617" in site:craigslist.org

just brought up six hits

By design, you can't. Craigslist is intended to be local sales.

That said, there are tools such as Craigslist Reader , that will search multiple areas of your choosing all at once. It will even search on a schedule, though you should use that feature sparingly or their firewall will block your IP if you search too often.

CrazedList works pretty well, too.

Serge, I was also going to suggest the google search. (btw, you don't need the 'in' - "ovation 1617" site:craigslist.org)

My Question: If you use one of these search tips and find someone selling a guitar you want on Craig's List, and they are not local, how can you enact the transaction so both parties feel safe?

Find someone local to handle it for you. Craigslist is supposed to be like the local for sale section in the paper, but I've seen ads where people list shipping charges.

That's kind of tough. It takes a leap of faith, so it is worth doing some research. There are scammers out there who copy pictures from someone's auction and then pretend that they have that guitar for sale. You can ask them for additional specific photos of the guitar that only someone who is in possession of it could send. Like a close up of just the nut slots, or a close up of the endpin. Something that a normal eBay seller wouldn't have posted.

I did have one excellent experience buying from a distant CL seller, but it did make me nervous to send a money order.

You can google the address to be sure it isn't a hotel or post box location. You can google earth the address to see what kind of neighborhood it is. One purchase I did from a forum seller was a residence, and the other was a professional business location. That gave a touch of warm fuzzy to the transaction.

Good points! Here's my .02 FRN...

If the ad has a phone number, use it at some point! Or ask for one... or send yours...

Ask for pics. If the seller gives an excuse, you don't want that git.

Put yourself in the sellers position and consider how you would want to be 'approached'.

If the price is rea$onable (do your research!) and you really want the guitar, DON'T LOW-BALL!!!. Plus add the appropriate shipping/insurance amount to your offer.

The last step is how I got my sweet Deacon 12er. I sent the seller my offer along with my phone number. The guy had been swamped with local and distant low ball offers and 'creative' trades and financing. After a week and a half, I thought it was another futile CL effort. Then outta da blue, he calls. He appreciated my approach and sold it to me.

If you do finalize a deal, be sure to determine if they know how to prepare, pack and ship the guitar.

Iffy, that's exactly what I did in getting my Patriot...I called, we talked, he sent additional pic's, we worked it out and I have a fabulous guitar that I had spent over 30 years waiting to get...

And Whatever you do, NEVER, AND I MEAN NEVER, use USPS parcel post...Priority is great, but never Parcel Post!

If you're searching for musical instruments on CL and ebay, this is the best website, bar none.

http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cgi?cat=mus

just click on the down arrow, scroll to Ovation, and click GO.

you can also type in a filter for a specific model, or also filter by distance.

It's also very quick.

I've found a lot of great deals.

good luck, Ernie
