Anyone have ideas on songs for a memorial? It doesn't necessarily need to be a grandma thing as most people there aren't her grand kids.

I've looked around the internet some and have a couple ideas, but I thought I would try you all.

Photographs And Memories may end up being a song for a slide show.

1)Izzy's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/It's a wonderful world.
2)I saw the light by Hank Williams

If your going to sing in church or at the grave, bring lyric sheets; people will want to sing along.

I buried my grandmother last january. you don't want songs that are too complicated, especially if it's cold outside. we could see it coming from a long way off, so the shock wasn't there. actually, it was a relief that she'd gone onto a place where she'd suffer no more. I imagined she was up in heaven having tea with grandpa. I know she missed him.

The first song you played on the guitar she gave you.

Sorry for your loss may God grant you strength.

You know I really like Photographs and Memories, but what I think doesn't matter much. I never thought of it as a song for a grandmother, but I suppose it might work.
I really like that version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Barred at the 5th fret started with a G, it sounds pretty good.

"Fire and Rain"? That has the lovely lyric of "I always thought I'd see you again" (as you, Damon, did!) "Sweet Dreams and Flying Machines" works well as a metaphor: Like Tull would have it "No Time For Everything" (alas)

Photographs and Memories will be the slide show music for sure.

Take Me Home Country Roads was the first song I did for her, and it is close enough "take me home", but honestly, I never have liked playing it much.

Dobro, I'll run those past the family.

Now it's not my usual genre, but I found this song amongst the Christian artists Monk and Neagle. What do y'all think?

Grandma loved to dance, and used to do the Arthur Murray thing for years.

Dancing With The Angels

"Dancing with the Angels" is a great song; another really good one is "Home Where I Belong" (BJ Thomas sang it), which I sang at the funeral of one of my dearest friend's grandma. "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," the old hymn, is another one that I've sung, too.
In the end, your heart will tell you what's the most meaningful for you and your family as you honor her--and even though we can't be there with you, we'll be singing along with you from all over the world.
Hugs,

--Karen

Depends upon how long the slide show is. Looking at your guitar collection, I guess you're a pretty good player.

Given that, I'd come up with a nondescript fingerstyle piece that can be gently presented under the slide show. It could even be a succession of chords in no particular cadence.

The audience will not be distracted by a vocal performance of a song and they will not be looking for a meaning in what you're playing. Plus you won't be wrestling with lyrics that might not fit the situation. It's just nice music under a slideshow.

You could then present a full song that has meaning and might fit the circumstances in another part of the ceremony.

Another good song is I can Only Imagine by Mercy Me. The singer wrote that song when his father died.
God bless,

I'm Going Home by Hootie and the Blowfish. Give it a listen. If you want the chords let me know. It would be #2 on my list after Amazing Grace on bagpipes.

A bit overdone, but 'My Heart Will Go On' might be appropriate.

Now and Forever - Carole King

Now and forever, you are a part of me
And the memory cuts like a knife
Didn't we find the ecstasy, didn't we share the daylight
When you walked into my life

Now and forever, I'll remember
All the promises still unbroken
And think about all the words between us
That never needed to be spoken

We had a moment, just one moment
That will last beyond a dream, beyond a lifetime
We are the lucky ones
Some people never get to do all we got to do
Now and forever, I will always think of you

Didn't we come together, didn't we live together
Didn't we cry together
Didn't we play together, didn't we love together
And together we lit up the world

I miss the tears, I miss the laughter
I miss the day we met and all that followed after
Sometimes I wish I could always be with you
The way we used to do
Now and forever, I will always think of you
Now and forever, I will always be with you

Sorry about your loss. "Amazing grace" is a good one, particularly if you can line up some pipes.

Flowers of the Forest played solo on the pipes is another good one.

Bob,

May I suggest "Everything I Own" (Bread). Although frequently mistaken for a romantic love song, it was supposedly David Gates' tribute to his father after his death.
