Hi, y'all, I just joined yesterday and haven't had a time to introduce myself. I've been an Ovation player for a little over eight years now.

At the time I was like so many acoustic players and didn't really take Ovations very seriously, but had seen a lot of them played by big name pickers so I knew they couldn't be bad. The big problem with me was more aesthetic.

So I have this old guitar that I really love and was worried about it getting destroyed by a baggage handler if I ever had to gate check it or, God forbid, check it as baggage and I started looking for a "throwaway" guitar. I went to Mars Music on January 31, 2000, and looked at their collection of Korean Celebrities. I settled on a mahogany topped one for $250. It sounded good. Surprisingly good, and it's still my travel guitar. A good, basic, no frills acoustic guitar.

Ok, so now I'm starting to change my mind a little about Ovations. Well, as you all know, Mars started to go under in '02. The wife and I decided to go by and take a look at what they had left. Went in, saw an Ovation 12-string. Wife says, "I sure would like to hear you play that. You haven't had a 12-string in over 20 years." I played it, we both liked it. She REALLY liked it. Didn't really have the $720 they were asking for it, but told her I'd sleep on it and if it was still there the next day I'd figure out something.

We came home and I got on the internet checking prices. Found out that a brand new 6751 for that price was a pretty good deal. Went back the next day and it was there. I got them to put the charges on three credit cards and here I am today.

Needless to say, I'm now very much an Ovation lover and will probably end up owning at least a couple more. I've owned several 12-strings over the last five decades and I have to say that the Ovation is one of the best, if not THE best, I've ever owned.

My question(s): How do I find out the specs on each of my guitars? I've found a little information on the internet and at the Ovation site, but not much. I'm pretty sure my Celebrity is a laminated top. Doesn't matter, I'd just like to know. How does the 6751 differ from the 6751LX?

Oh yeah, a little more about me. I'm gettin' to be a geezer. Started playing guitar back in '59 when my parents finally gave in to my wheedling for a real guitar and got me an El Cheapo Sears Silvertone acoustic for my 8th birthday. My mother wanted me to play piano and I think she was trying to deter me by forcing me to play a crummy guitar. Didn't work. I'm still picking but never got the hang of tickling the ivories. My wife does that. I've collected a few guitars along the way. Bought and sold them as a sideline for a while, but got tired of all the wheeling and dealing involved so I decided to save a few that I liked and sell the rest. I'm down to ten guitars now that I just really can't part with (which includes the Celebrity and the Balladeer). I'll probably be adding a couple more, but that's about the high end of manageable for me.

My parents insisted I learn to read music from the get-go, so I started taking lessons a week after I got my first guitar. The lessons more than made up for the crappy guitar. I'm not as good as I think I ought to be, but I'm good enough to put beans on the table and pay the bills, so I'm ok with that. I love music for the sheer sake of music and will sit down and play just about anything with anybody as long as they aren't full of themselves and think they're some kind of guitar god. I've been playing long enough to know that no one really "masters" guitar, and learning from each other (regardless of how long we've been playing or how good we might be) is one of the great joys of playing.

That's about it for now. Looks like a great forum. Gotta roll for now and go put up the groceries. Just wanted to get an intro done while it was fresh on my mind.

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the Old Farts Club. PEZ answered your questions except that your Celebrity is laminated. I think all Celebs were.

If you were 8 in 59 you're not a geezer, trust me on this one. Not even getting close to starting to be.
See, aren't you glad you came here now?

On this board, you gotta be in at least your 80's to be a geezer.

I think I may have been an Old Fart when I was twelve. :p

Thanks for the info on the Celeb. I was pretty sure it was laminated, but it still sounds good. Mars had seven mahogany-topped Celebs when I bought that one. I played them all several times. It wasn't the prettiest of the lot, but it was the one that sounded best and that's what matters most to me.

Ok, one question left that I forgot to ask. Since my 12-string has made it six years without any problems, am I ok keeping it in standard tuning or do you think I should drop it a half step or more?

ALL of my 12ers are kept in standard tuning. The only time I would compromise would be if one was damaged and/or repaired. Although there are a few folk that 'drop' tune to ensure 'longevity'...

I've had an Applause and now a Balladeer 12. Probably 20 years of minimal use with the 2 of them and they've always been in standard tuning. They stay in tune, too.

and I don't think geezers get vibes.

Well that depends a lot on their geezette, Mark. :)

Welcome aboard, dawhealer! This is way more than a decent group. Been here less than a year myself and I’ve got serious family here now.
Stellar people, all.
