1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2007 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for
traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario:
Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario:
Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2007 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.
2007 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and jo ins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has affair with psychologist.

Scenario:

1957 - Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock.
2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario:
Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.
2007 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2007- BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny's Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.

Johnny must have been a real wimp if Mark won the fight.

How about something with a positive spin..

Scene: Talented Musicians with a good following and folks willing to invest in their career.
1957: Pay 1000's of $'s to get recorded, only to be ripped off by some 3rd party or any of the many party's along the way, and in the end, your "hit song" never gets played anywhere.

2009: You record your own demo with a video, put it on YouTube, CDBABY and your own website, and sell your own albums and 1000's if not millions of people listen to your tunes.

Notes: Of course it doesn't always go that way, remember I set the scene up as "talented" musicians, but... the point is it "CAN" go that way.

The opportunities for musicians today compared to the 50's are overwhelming. Granted in the 50's and 60's we didn't have to put up with listening to too much garbage as the industry had a built in filter for that... they just didn't sell it.

Now we get everything at our fingertips. The good, the bad, the great, the forgettable, but now it's OUR choice to listen or not. It's OUR choice to seek out the new and great.

Pretty cool I think...

I see Mile's post at 4K (finally) in the same way Mom almost always had a cold dinner. Always taking care of others first and making sure things went well before they got to sit down and relax.

Scenario:
1957 - Johnny sees Elvis perform on TV and happens to notice that the Girls are going nuts! Takes on a Paper-route and shovels manure to buy a guitar at the local Mom/Pop Music Store. Learns five chords and two minors. His Mom asks him learn to play "Amazing Grace" for her.

1959 - Johnny is drafted and sees the world...

1963 - Johnny comes home, is unemployed and disillusioned. Picks up his guitar and learns to play "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", et al.

1964 - Johnny (now Moon Dog) meets Betty (now Leeza) and he wins her over with Dylan songs. She wins him over with Dylan Thomas and Tie-Dye blouses.

1967 - The Commune breaks up over differences and Johnny and Betty hitch hike to Indiana where Johnny's Uncle can get him a job in a Factory that injects molds.

1968 - Johnny sells his guitar to buy a Crib.

2007 - Johnny makes his last house payment and tuitions are finally paid off so Johnny and Betty retire and Betty starts selling her handmade Beads on Ebay. On his last day at the Factory Johnny passes by these odd shaped salad bowl looking things that his factory made at the other end of the building, always wondered what these were. Looking them over he sees the word "Ovation" on the inside. When he gets home he Googles "Ovation" only to find that they are the backside of a bunch of guitars on this French guy's website. Hmmm I used to play guitar...

2009 - Johnny hits 1000 posts on the OFC, has remodelled two bedrooms into a recording studio and Music room. Now plays "Amazing Grace" and "Flood" with the Youth Band at Church. Every time Betty say's he has too many guitars he just woes her back with "It Ain't Me, Babe"...

You won't escape all of those "story of my life" copyright violations by changing the names and the dates a little bit, Woody.
My mistake--I just noticed the part about the last house payment, so it can't be my story. I've got a long way to go.

I'm curious to know if any of our black members remember those days as fondly?

Hey, I played Moondoggy in a Gidget musical way back when in high school in the mid 70's. Gidget sure was cute as hell, as were the other beach girls in the show. Dang, now we're all old, hairy in the wrong places, and ugly.

Yeah, things change.
