Yesterday my buddy Jeff Burns woke up to a sad sight: the entire bridge on his beloved 80s Elite (with synth pickup) tore away from the body, strings flapping in the wind.

Fixable yes, but traumatic as all hell!

The same thing that happened to my old Matrix. Remember that??? That guitar is still going strong, but it looks like hell now.

Is this a common occurrence with Ovations? It seems that I've heard of it happening to others as well. I was hoping that it was just the cheaper ones, like my Matrix, but apparently not.

One thing that may have been a contributing factor is that the very night that it happened, I'd gone out jamming without a case, and it was sub-zero that night. Maybe???

I wonder if the Mothership (John B in particular) would do for someone so far away in time from warranty protection? A discount at least...

Jeff is meticulous with his guitar; uses a humidifier and watches the temp shifts etc...

I used to have this recurring dream every now and then where someone switched my guitar for another Ovation which was beat to snot and I wouldn't find out until I got home and opened the case by which time it was too late to do anything about it.

Anyway, when I was at law school, I lived in the grad residence at Queen's University which quarters were a bit dry in the winter and I wasn't using a humidifier unlike my friend a few doors down the hall who had an upright base, two acoustic guitars and a dobro stashed in his room.

So one night I came home from a party, pulled out my guitar, and as I started to play my first thought was "this isn't my guitar" accompanied by the same feeling of panic as in the dream where it got ripped off.

Turns out that it was my guitar but the bridge had lifted quite nicely. The guitar was repaired under warranty by a company in Toronto which I suppose is an agent for Ovation. There was no damage to the finish and you can't tell that it has been repaired.
