Apple announced "iLife 2009" today (for Macs, of course) and the included "Garage Band" program now has the ability to directly purchase and play video lessons for guitar and piano, plus selected lessons on how to play certain songs presented by the original artists. I think they said they are $4.99 each. Kinda corny, yet kind of interesting too. One example was John Fogerty teaching you how to play "Proud Mary" (must be a short lesson ;-)

(Before I get flamed, I know that Fogerty is actually a very talented guitar player. I just couldn't pass up an easy wise-crack about "Proud Mary," please forgive me.)

Anyway… supposedly the library of "lessons" will continue to grow, but I don't think we'll find Leo Kottke teaching us how to play "Vaseline Machine Gun" anytime soon…

It also has a feature where you plug your guitar into the computer and the software mimics an assortment of amps and effects boxes. (I guess you stomp your foot on the keyboard to play an old Crybaby ;-) I haven't tried it, I have no idea how well it works or sounds.

Anyway, I thought it offered some interesting ideas for any of you Mac/OFC folks (if there are any besides me.) The entire iLife bundle is included with all new Mac purchases, and it's pretty inexpensive if purchased separately for your existing Mac. Here's a link for anyone interested:

(PS: Sorry if I have exceeded my "wisecrack to content" ratio, I'll try to behave… maybe ;-)

Hey standing....I reckon you'll find several Mac users here. I am totally computer illiterate and I have a PC (I think that's what they call it) but I don't know what the difference is between this and a Mac. I think the operator has a lot to do with it.

The garage band program sounds interesting.

Thanks for the update. They continue to roll out some very cool stuff. There's plenty of Mac users around here, myself included.

GB was already a very good program and I think a lot of folks underestimate it's capabilities. The face recognition and geotagging for iPhoto also sound like nice improvements and even if you purchase iLife (which you won't have to because it will come free on the new Mac that you're finally going to buy) you get a hell of a lot of capability. The OS10.5+iLife+iWorks for $169. is a great value. Add Bento and you're pretty well set. Haven't seen upgrade prices from '08 version.

Here's some more info on it.

iLife 09

The keynote from yesterdays event was supposed to be live streamed but they shut it down after a few minutes because someone hacked in and added "inappropriate text and audio". Someone probably peppered it with "I'm a PC".

I just received my Macbook Pro yesterday. I was impressed with how easy it was to get it on my home network. I hope the upgrade price won't be to high.

Upgrade price is $79.

Phil - exhaust what you can with iLife-08 before you think about upgradding. There's LOTS of capabilities there. I haven't even scratched the surface.

I think this is fantastic.

I find plenty of (wrong) lessons on youtube and love it when I find the original artist teaching or at least showing his fingering.

My favorite is Andy Summers of the Police doing Roxane and Message in a Bottle.

Here's the link. I went back to look for it and it's not obvious.

I ordered my computer on January 1. It doesn't qualify for the discount.
