I picked up four for $20 total about five years ago, one of which was one of those fancy booms with multiple adjustments. As Stephen says, the tripods are the most secure, particularly if your using a boom attachment, but sometimes there isn't much floor space at the gig and I find a smaller round base fits in more spots than a tripod. Some giggers use sandbags to add stability, which could be important if you're hanging a guitar on the mic stand as well.

As for using two mics on one stand, I've seen 'em, but I make do with what I got.

Most mike clips come with the adaptor or can take both with a concentric dual thread. Are the threads on all mics standard, As for stands Hercules are good but the pros use either Beyer Dynamic or K & M (Keonig & Meyer) My preference is K&M. Neither are cheap, but every single component of the stands is available as a spare, so they can last forever. I've just replaced all of our generic mike stands with K&M and it was money well spent. That said, I was paying wholesale so it didn't hurt as much.
