My love is playing electric slide. I am seriously considering a Preacher, Deacon, or Viper as the 24 fret neck and the deep cut away makes it nice for high end sliding. My question is the pickups and which is best for Southern Rock or Country sound? My guess is that the Viper single coils, but Gibsons with humbuckers are also a nice guitar for slide play so maybe the Preacher. I would appreciate any help before I buy.

If you go with the Preacher, get a Preacher Deluxe with the built in preamp. Otherwise, the Ovation hummers aren't that great. The Viper tho' is a great little guitar.

There was a thread talking about these various pickups just this week.....

Welcome.

If your looking for the Gibson humbucker sound then you should also add the UKII to your search.

Viper or UKII.

Here's a short demo of Viper tone:

Nutmeg Viper
It resides at Paul's house now.

Retro and Golden Vipers
On this one the first guitar has Artec HB's with the alnico 5 magnets - a lot like a Duncan HB101.

The retro Viper (now at Redwood's) has Artec mini's which are close to the Viper pups in sound.

The Golden Viper (now in Ireland) has Duncan Design HB103's.

My favorite pups are the Viper but real Artec mini's are pretty close.

I may have a Preacher Deluxe you can try soon.

Hi Too2Tall,

Another vote for the viper but depending on what you're doing, a UKII might be good too. If you're looking for a Les Paul sound then go UKII. If a strat/tele sound is what you're after, the Viper.

I have a video where I'm using a slide with heavy distortion ala Zak Wylde on the UKII

Welcome! I'm sure the Viper or UKII would make you happy, but the Viper is going to be easier to find and you'll probably pay a bit less. I love mine and I cannot believe every single one of them doesn't get snagged up when they go on the sale block. I think it's just a really well kept secret that will eventually get out. If you're looking for advice ... buy one of each ... why you still can.

Lest it be ignored, you mentioned a Deacon as a possibility also and if the electronics are working properly I would definitely give it the nod over a preacher/preacher deluxe.

Why?
Overall design and feel of the guitar, neck, sound, etc vs the preacher/preacher deluxe.

just my own opinion but that is what the OFC is all about, right?

Really appreciate all the help. Great site! I really like the 24 fret neck for slide with the deep cutaway that the ovation solid bodies have. What is all this about pickup placement not being optimal for 24 fret neck guitars for maximum tonal response? And is it just another guitar myth?

t2t, both pickups are used in the video link I posted. Maybe you can decide for yourself. I think guitar myth.
