Location: George, South |Africa | I have a 12 string Ovation, Made in China unfortunately, but what the hell - it's all I could afford. The sound box however, is made in the U.S.A., and this incidentally is where my problem has occured. For some reason the black resin(!) on the back appears to be corroding. Or so it seems. I first discovered this when after playing, I found these greasy stains on my trousers. I play mostly sitting. And there where the guitar rests on my lap is where the stains are caused. There is a clear mark on the guitar where the "corrosion" has taken place. My jeans look as though I have been working on my greasy old MG! And the stains are just as difficult to get rid of.
Nevertheless, what causes this to happen, and what can I do to halt the corrosion without damaging the guitar? |

First Welcome to the OFC. I don't know what to tell you about the problem but can say that there are other members here that may be abe to help. I will assume you mean the problem is with the "Bowl" coating. Be patient right now as many are either at NAMM or at an OFC get together in Florida for the weekend |

Location: Earth·SolarSystem·LocalInterstellarCloud·Local Bub | Sounds like the bowl paint has failed to adhere to the bowl. Bad batch of paint or bad bowl prep, possibly.
Very strange.
I don't know of a solution other than to return it or strip it and refinish. |

Location: George, South |Africa | Thanks folks, for your prompt responses, much appreciated. Yes I do mean the bowl coating, and No, the guitar did not come into contact with any harmful chemicals. (I keep it far away from my booze!). It appears to be the coating that is inferior, and perhaps I ought to take it back to the suppliers. Just needed to know if it was a regular problem. I will give some feedback once the suppliers have had a look. |

Location: Upper Left USA | I haven't seen that before. I believe that the bowl paint is an enamal or an epoxy so once it cures it should be tough to separate.
If you or someone used Naptha as a cleaner (or lighter fluid) that would leave an oily residue and possibly leach under the coating.
Another possible cause may be related to this phenomena, first seen in the movie "Coming to America".
