In my case, one 6 string and one 12 wasn't enough to motivate me, but once I started getting into the "too many" area according to SWMBO, I started practicing a lot more. The dweezil method of liking only the multihole, ebony neck, or the "manly" neck method of others would bore me. The other extreme, having one of each, was a bit much, but I still think about it. I think any player ought to have a 6 and a 12, yes, but also a nylon and a 12 fret wider neck for fingerstyle. Spruce top, cedar and maybe graphite tops would help the variety. I've barely touched the electrics, but there are so many different varieties of sounds from those, that the needs could go on forever if I ever get into playing some of the songs I'd like to on electric guitar. The hope is that when I get more time away from work I'll still have enough motivation to enjoy playing them all. Every one of the 14 I have sounds excellent and different from each of the others. How could that be too many?

Round holes, wide nuts, narrow nuts, walnut fretboards, rosewood fretboards, elecrics, a perspex body, a chrome plated body, one with a whammy bar, a carbon fibre body with spruce top, a 5 string banjo, a 5 string bass, hell even a £3500 Taylor!

DFor instance, I needed a very electric jangly strum over the weekend and took the Strat, with a completely different pedal board. I could probably cover all my needs with five or six guitars. Everything beyond that is just hobby gratification, which I can happily say I try my darndest to satisfy.
