As I'm sure some of you are aware I am a Legg head and love listening to and playing his lovely tunes. He is the reason why I play Ovations/Adamas guitars (yes I know he doesn't play them anymore).

Anyhow I've been on a tone quest to try and get close to his sound for when I play his pieces. After a lot of research, head scratching, deads ends, equipment tests and frustration I think I have come up with something that is close to the sort of tone he gets of some of his tunes.

No it's not 100% but a very good starting point for me. Yes I should find my own voice/tone and yes I am, but this is about trying to enjoy playing his pieces with his general sound.

It's not a perfect rendition or complete, it's a tone test. The tune is Nail Talk.

Anyhow for those interested check it out here:

http://www.boiledsweets.com/tunes/nailtalktest1.mp3

I'll be recording the full piece in the fullness of time.

For those interested in what I used...

Ovation 2007 Collector with Elixir nanoweb 11s into a Zoom A2.1U with a little compression and bright slap reverb then USB'd into the PC. Normalised and MP3 encoded. I think I've been trying to overcomplicate the problem, less is more.

As an aside to this I've realised that the real answer is to record and play with a dry sound and get the performance and technique 200% down and polished. Then add processing accordingly. I beleive I can attain the same level as the professional fingerstylists, all it takes is dedication, practise, time ( oh and a load of guitars ;) )

Still I'm happy, I'm in it for the long haul :)

Thanks to RDA08 for the encouragement and inspiration.

Adrian always used real light strings and had a plain G. I found his tone over the years to get more and more bright and brittle.

Yup, he typically used 10s, in fact these days he uses 9s but then he is using a guitar more like an electric.

His tone probably got brighter and brighter as his ears got older!

Sounds good. Now don't you need the Keith tuners so you can retune on the fly? I like to see you buy more and more gear. :)

Very pretty and nicely executed. I don't know the tune, but you must have done it justice... some cool transitions and chordal "colors". I also like the reverb on this one; not overdone.

Dweez, Nice job! Same tone as a lot of Legg's stuff - Sounds just like "Chicken Little's last Ride.

I think Mr Legg is an incredible musician, but regardless of whatever guitar he uses, I've always despised his live and recorded tone. Go figure.

Ah, Professor Templeman finishes my post for me.
Thank You.
Adrian is great, I love the guy. His initial tone was nice, could have been fatter. Didn't care for the direction it went in. Got to love his chops though. That's what's important.

Gordon Giltrap had a similar acoustic tone, as well . . .

Giltrap played Ovation's early in his career, Folklores and Pacemakers mostly, though I seem to remember the big hit being on a Deacon 12. Later Yamaha, then when my ex-business partner was distributing K Yairi over here he produced a limited run Yairi GG signature model. Lately he's been using Fylde and most recently the synthetic/polymer Cool Acoustics. Apparently he's had carpel tunnel problems or something similar, and his strings have been getting very light. His Fyldes were designed for ultra-light strings. Maybe that's why I don't like his tone either. Nice player though.
