I would like opinions on these two acoustic/electric 12 string Ovation models; 1866 Legend with shallow bowl versus a 6751 standard balladeer with mid depth bowl. If you can offer anything pro or con between these guitars, I would appreciate hearing it. I'm going to purchase one or the other and I'm in a quandary as to which. Both are internet purchases so trying them is not an option.

I don't know if this helps, exactly, but I have a 1756 12 string with a deep bowl and the sound is deep, full, and projects amazingly. So I would go for the deeper bowl. The 12s I have played with shallower bowl seem thinner, but they also have all been cutaways, where mine is not, so that may have something to do with it, too.

Tough choice, both great guitars. If you play mostly plugged in or standing up I would go for the Legend. If you play acoustic or sitting down, go for the balladeer. Good luck.

What are you going to use the guitar for?

A gig or two, at home, parties. Acoustic and electric playing. I guess what I'm saying is that it needs to cover several bases. I suspect that I'm answering my own question and should go for the deeper bowl?

Except for the "gig or two" part, it sounds like we use our guitars about the same way. I always prefer the deeper bowl. I've had a couple of shallow bowls that play and sound great, but they lack bass. Most of the time I prefer the rumble of the bass strings.

When given a choice, I go with the deeper bowl.

If you're playing mainly plugged in, standing up, with a band (i.e. loud) - go for the shallow. If not go for the deeper bowl. I love my mid-depth 12. Great sound plugged in and unplugged.
YMMV.

I agree with the SSB crowd. I own an 1866 and plugged in, it serves my purposes just fine. That said, when I need a 12er these days, I reach for the EA-58.

Many thanks for all the valuable input. The 6751 has been dropped off at UPS and is on the way. Now I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas to come.

Did you inquire about the shipping cost?

You know, Jeff, I did. The guitar is being shipped from California to Maine, so just can't get much further away. I bought it from a single woman and she didn't have a clue about shipping. She found going to a music store for a box and then boxing it and going to a UPS facility was a daunting task. So, I found the nearest UPS Store for her to go to. They are a bit more expensive than if you took it directly to a UPS terminal, but not too much. The difference is that all she will need to do is take the guitar to The UPS Store and they will box it appropriately, insure it and ship it. The cost is around $130. Again, that's from California to Maine. The 1866 that I was considering is in Connecticut (much closer to Maine) I checked with UPS there and for the same boxing, insurance and shipping it's $58! That's the cost of getting something you want, I guess. The bottom line is that I am getting a gorgeous 6751 balladeer 12 that was purchased new, placed in the closet and never played for $480 including shipping.

A touch OT...

I hate those outfits! I bought an Ovation from an out-of-state young lady. Price with shipping/insured was agreed upon. Send her a list of packing instructions and where to ship from. Her friend said "go to the neighborhood UPS Store". Unfortunately she did and was po$tally 'raped'.

When I found out how much they charged her, I sent her another $30.

BOT; enjoy your Ovation!

I just received an email from the young woman in CA. She said that the total price for boxing, insuring and shipping was just over $100. Now, in full disclosure, I am a breeder of German Shepherd dogs. There is a fellow in CT. that wants to bring his female to me for breeding in April. I emailed him and said that if he would pay for guitar and shipping, I would consider that the stud fee for breeding his female. He paid, she shipped, and my O will be here next Friday. :)

Wish I'd have thought of that. I could have saved a lot of money on guitars. But no one would probably want me as a stud for their dog, since I don't have papers.

By the way, if anyone is interested in the 1866 Legend A/E 12 string that I didn't take, please email me and I'll send along contact number, photos, etc.

While I think you made the right choice, I had the opportunity today to play a Legend SSB 12 string. Even with dead strings, it was an impressive guitar....
