Gotta question for you knowledgable types out there - I think the truss rod let go on my trusty 80's strat I've had since new. I was giving it a tweak last night, there was a loud pop, and I've got a cheese slicer at the 12th fret now. :( My question - can the truss rod be replaced, or do I need to go for a whole new neck? On one hand, a birdseye Warmoth would be really nice, but there's just something about the old tattered neck with 20 years of aging on the maple that tugs at me.

Bugger!!
Can be done but probably not worth it on an 80's Strat.
Older yes!!
Buy a licenced Fender replacement or look out for an original 80's Maple neck.
They sometimes come up on the Bay

I saw a webpage a couple of years ago detailing a step by step Strat neck truss rod replacement. It required removing the fretboard. It was on a true vintage Strat from the 60's, so worth it. You have to be the judge on whether yours is.

Your description of the 12th fret does make it sound like the truss rod broke. Sometimes the tr nuts strip, and they can be replace easily. If that were the case, I could probably help you out with a new one out of my parts box.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

What Paul said - it requires fretboard removal, which can be done with Honey's steam iron, a pallet knife, and an inhuman amount of patience. Parts and tooling costs isn't bad.

versus Fleabay. Your choice

What variety of Strat was it, and what was the neck like? I might have one you could use.
