A freind at work "gifted" me with a guitar to play while I arrange for mine to be restored. It's not an ovation (hence "off topic"), but it does look vintage, and, in immaculate shape. Couldn't find much on the net on it except it's probably Japanese or Korean. The name on the head is "KENT" looks like an inexpensive flat back guitar or beginners guitar, but I kind of dig the retro look. I'll send pictures tonight, but thought maybe one of you folks may have some input on this. Rick c.

If I remember correctly, there were two major plant that cranked out gits for the American market years ago (60-70s). Aria was one of them. Can't recall the other. Decent guitars but definitely not top notch. Later on, there were some nice gits produced. I rescued a 'small horn' double cutaway Kent electric that's not a bad git, but not a Gibby.

BTW...maybe I should ask...Would it be improper to post a pic of a "non-Ovation" guitar, or would that not be appropriate in this forum... Rick

I can handle that! :DI remember Kents. I was curious about Kents so I did some Googling. It doesn't look like there's any connection to Aria. There were some good quality electric guitars built for Aria by Matsumoku, but searching over at matsumoku.org turns up no mention of Kent. My first guitar was a Heit Deluxe, a relative of Teisco. It was a gift so I didn't realize how cheap it was. Luckily it had a good neck so it didn't hinder my ability to play- lack of talent did that! -Steve W.

You can store the images over at ovationfanclub.ning.com, Photobucket, wherever, then use the IMAGE button on this page to put them in your post.

Before 1965, Harmony and Kay advertised guitars in addition to Gibson, Gretsch, Fender, Guild and Epiphone. Cordova had one or two ads during this period, too. Beginning in 1965, ads for Kent, Hagstrom and Teisco guitars began appearing. Some of the electric models appearing in these new ads were pretty funky with lots of switchgear.
