I like the general feel / weight of the 11-52 set of strings ( LET'S NOT DISCUSS BRANDS PLEASE! ) but I like to replace the 11 with a 12.

So the question is do you 'modify' a standard set of strings?

No it doesn't count -- I mean do you MODIFY any set that comes out of the packet regardless of what they call the set!

Nope. 10-46 on all the solidbodies. Only change I've made is I'm trying out some pure nickel-wrapped to see if I like them any better. I used them when I was younger, and then most manufacturers got to the point where there is very little nickel in their strings at all.

I did that 25 years ago on my solid bodies but never for the acoustics.

12-52 on little acoustice
11-48 on Electrics but it's been so long I think I've forgotten how to play them.

Wow, I haven't gotten through all the possible standard OTS sets, let alone start customizing! I envy those that are discerning enough to know exactly what they need/want.

First criteria is whatever sets are in inventory that came to me free of charge. I'm still working off several dozen sets meeting this criteria. When I run out of the free stuff, I'll probably stick with the 12-52s on the acoustics.

If my stable had to wait for customized stuff, they'd all still be wearing the original strings and sounding way sad. (Which reminds me, time for new "accessories" for Gert, Jewel, and Johanna.)

The set I buy for my 12string comes with 3-9ga. strings. I replace them with 10's simply because the 9's break too easily at the worst possible time.

I only replace the individual strings that are worn, so I guess by definition I'm playing custom sets.

I buy a standard light 12 -53 and replace the top two with 13 and 17.... Close to your pattern Dweezil.

Dobro,

might try the b string too. I find the top especially is too thin in the 11-52 set...

Indeed. With an Adamas, say, you don't need bridge cables in the bass, so 53 etc is fine. The stiffer 13 and 17 adds firmness and volume on top I really like. My nemesis is the 24: This is a rather light wound string that gets chopped up really fast. But I've tried the next one up and it cuts like a razor, can't handle the 26...

My dream set would be one that came in 13 17 24 down to 53, with extras on the top three. Hell, I'd pay well for that.

PS I'd love to find a source for coated (like Elixir) singles of the 24! As it is, I buy 13s and 17s by the box of singles (12 per).
