i dont know about you people but i cannot for the life of me understand how in the hell the major guitar manufacturers can sell their standard guitars for 5X times the money just to have an artist sign them or use their name on them?
do any of you own any of these?

i just dont get it.

are they a good investment?GWB

If you got money to burn, never play it and stick it under your bed for 30 years your kids might profit from it.

You gotta decide if you are a player or a collector...you can be both but IMHO you would not be buying these types of guitars.

Investment? Not for me. I suppose there's a market or they wouldn't make them. But I think people that buy them as "investments" (as opposed to collectors) have more dollars than sense.

The few Ovation signature models that been issued might cost more than the standard model but included Serious upgrades,(Better wood, better tuners, nicer trim), and have always been well worth the extra $$$.

These are like the "vintage" or "distressed" series of guitars put out by Fender and others that are essentially new guitars but have been made to look like they've been played for 30 years.

Kinda silly.....

There was a David Gilmour strat that had some different pick-ups and a re-wired five-way switch...
But for alot cheaper than the thousands of dollars they wanted, you could just get an older strat and make those modifications yourself.

That was the model that they would make to look 'old' for you for another $700.

I guess they make those kinds of guitars for a targted customer, specifically the 'fans'. If I was going to look for collectibles, I would buy that $1600 1978 AdamasI on Craigslist, send it to the mothership for detailing, then sell it for a substantial profit.. :) (..but I think Jerome is going to acquire that one ;) )

The endorsee edition that just blows me away is the cobbled together, trashed out EVH Frankenstrat. I saw one on display for something like $26,000 and honestly thought it was a joke. The sales people could not convince me otherwise and it wasn't until I researched it up on the Interent that I discovered this was no joke. It looks better in the picture than up close up. If any of you are one of the 300 folks who bought this model within a few hours after it was released, I apologize for offending your discretionary spending habits.

I don't fault the guitar manufacturers at all. If someone is willing to buy these at inflated prices then good for the guitar makers for cashing in on that demand.

I recieved and e-mail this morning that I can buy a Jeff Beck signed '58 LesPaul replica, carefully "reliced", for $25,000.

GWB... did you get the same e-mail from Huber-Breese?

I think the Rickenbacker artist models both were and are worth the upcharge, both then and now. Of course, they're not anywhere near the price of an EVH or the Beck. But across the board, the Ric lineup is impressive - Roger McGuin, Suzanna Hoffs, Chris Squire, Tom Petty, John Kay, Lemmy, Carl Wilson, John Lennon, Glenn Frey, Pete Townshend. Aside from just the name, they are all really good instruments and every one of them defines a sound we can hear in our head.

For me that's should be the point of any signature model. For example, the Eric Johnson signature strat should have not just the look and feel but the same sonic characteristics. If you really like the particular sound someone gets out of their instrument and buying their guitar gives you the sound you're looking for, go for it.

But for god's sake if you want your new guitar relic'd, screw the upcharge, send it to me. I'll beat the crap out of it for only $350.

I usually do not go in for signature models...as a long time Strat player, my favorite was the '57 re-issue that I owned in Surf Green...it was an early-mid 80's and one of the first reissues...killer guitar...should have had my head examined for selling it but needed the money at the time...
Several years ago ('05) a friend of mine who has a nice botique guitar shop called me to tell me about a new Strat he had just gotten 2 of: Eric Johnson Model in White Blonde, very low serial number 1st year issue, brand new...He gave me a nice price, he kept the other one, and it is one of the finest Strats I have ever heard or played much less owned...TnT has seen it so he can vouch for how nice it is...worth every penny to me since these have gone up and today remain the most expensive in the Fender Strat line...

The David Gilmore "Black Strat" is I'm sure an equally fine guitar...but I personally don't want a guitar that someone had made to reflect every change Gilmore did to it over the 30+ years...I do like the book however...good read and nice photo's....

Townshend has been playing an Eric Clapton signature strat for quite a while now.

I wonder how much above & beyond I paid for my AD-II? Doesn't matter. It was the right guitar for me.
At the time I didn't even know who DiMeola was.

Doug
I'm not a high end guitar kind of guy.
I look at it more of a value for the dollar when shopping for another axe.
Don't get me wrong as there are alot of fine guitars for reasonable prices available.

As far as a signature model, one of the nicest strats I played was a "Jimmie Vaughn" signature model. But they are MIM strats so they don't get that much for them.

Now I'm lusting for wood and am shopping for an 000 body guitar. I have set my price at $300 max
I think I will get what I'm looking for including a hardshell case. :D

slipkid , yes that is where i got that from huber breeze music.
i have to admit that i did buy 2 guitars that were john lennon casino reissues that have gone up in value since i bought them used but they were nowhere near the price of these $3000.00 to $8000.00 reissue guitars.
i heard that there is a model out that steven vai donated a pint of his blood to add to the paint scheme of a stratocaster that is called the d.n.a. steven vai guitar and it sells for the likes of $25.000.00 bucks unreal.
maybe we will need alpep to donate some of his blood for an ovation d.n.a. 2009 signature model.
how about it alpep?
p.s. please no other jabs at other d.n.a. then blood.thank u.GWB

Hey Mike! Nice EJ Strat. Those really are sweet. They have a very distinctive tone and a very different neck profile as I recall.

I don't get it.....
If
I have a players name on a guitar
its my own

http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc285/pezcleo/?action=view&curre...
http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc285/pezcleo/?action=view&curre...

Still hope {could be dreaming}
to make the the bigtime......
If I do I'll be happy to have other people buy guitars with name on it.

In all honesty I am surprised Ovation has not attemped more signature models.

I doubt some of these especially EVH & Clapton Blackie (was 24K from the fender cs) are great investments.

However it took a nice American LP, Strat or
Tele and left it unplayed with tags on would likily go up in time.

I look at it as any anti thief incentive.
Hard to fence a guitar with PEZ on it...
