I have one of these, luver. It is a classic Ovation in so many ways. You're going to luve it. So will the wife. My advice? Involve her in why this is such a beautiful work of art to treasure. Point out the following things to her ...

1. The bridge is made out of brazilian rosewood (a rare and expensive wood) and is a five point shape ... very very cool, retro in a mid-century way, and a style that is as cutting edge today as when it first came out more than 40 years ago.

2. The rosette is very unusual and totally killer ... it is inlaid mother of pearl with an intricate black chain/ribbon in the MOP. She will appreciate the artistry involved in pulling something like this off.

3. There are three pieces of wood that make up the top. That's because the guy who started and innovated Ovation guitars, Charlie Kaman, owned a helicopter company and had some really good spruce wood they used to make rotor blades ... but the width of the wood required three planks to make the soundboard (instead of two pieces which is the way just about every guitar maker makes them). This guitar pays tribute to that incredible wood they used back then.

4. The bowl is hand laid fiberglass ... the same way they did it back when craftsmen still worked the bowls with their hands, and is finished to a mirror gloss that exceeds anything she's probably ever seen. So what's the big deal? Have her sing something directly into the soundhole to be amazed at how the whole guitar resonates.

5. The binding around the top is equally impressive ... it is 8(!) ply and the outside layer is aged in way that makes it look like it is 40 years old ... it is very nearly the same color as my original Josh White and original Balladeer 12 from 1968 ... in some ways it looks older and better. And talk about smooth? It is a work of art the way the top and bowl come together so smoothly (both aesthetically and tactically) all the way around the guitar.

6. The tuners are Kluson Deluxe. These are the real deal. The same brand were on there originally. These are the same tuners that are on many of the old guitars that fetch tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, even in these times. Even though they look old school, many people argue they are still anong the very best you can get.

7. The attention to detail extends to the headstock. There is a beautiful piece of real walnut veneered to the front of the headstock to give it an exquisitely classy look. Add to that the original Balladeer gold script (which BTW matches the font which is used to write the Ovation on the headstock to this day) and you've got understated elegance.

I could go on, but suffice it to say that this is a true handmade work of artistry done by dedicated craftsmen in a small AMERICAN factory in Connecticut. If more products were made like this, and more people took the time to appreciate the quality that translates to a tremendous value for the money (even if it "costs" more), this country would not be in quite so much trouble.

Basically, you're going to be stunned when you get it in your hands. It is so much better in person than it is in pictures. Enjoy it. For so many reasons.

Oh, did I mention that it sounds really, really, really good? Maybe as good as any Ovation ever? That's you'll just have to find out for yourself.

You know, as I read Bobbo's review, I kept thinking to myself, come on Bob, tell them how good the damned guitar sounds. Glad he finally did.

His reveiw is spot on. Early in December, I was at Toby's house. Played almost every guitar he had and that K1111 just sounded killer even compared with his Martins, Collings, and Taks (and he's got some great guitars).

In other words, the guitar's sound matches the craftsmanship and appearance (and I love that bridge so much, I had one put on my rebuilt 1117)......

my theory has always been, if a guitar maker is gonna ever do his best work, it will be with an anniversary model. .... I have a 30th taylor that bears this out also. also have a 07 collectors that is amazing.

It will be great, but it will be way different than your others. Unless you are one of those searchers for the Holy Grail, One Guitar Will Do Everything, why sell what you have? If you need the money, sell your Taylor.

it is - in several respects - volume - being the main one. very light weight - action high (but that can be fixed)
