There's a company out there that sells RFID chips to put in guitars and other musical instruments. It costs about $20 per instrument and you install it yourself. The number is registered in their database, plus you have a copy of it. It sounds a lot like chipping your dog in case he gets lost without his collar and tags.

One company advertises that their chips are put into a lot of high end instruments at the factory, including the Fender custom shop.

So, is this really of any value in musical equipment? Or, another way of asking, do police or pawn shops have readers to read RFID chips in anything?

The idea sounds cool, and would be a great proof-positive of ownership if your stolen guitar goes back to the factory or is recovered across the country and someone reads the chip. But if nobody scans instruments when recovered, it wouldn't be worth the $.

Lance Armstrong coulda used something like this. While he was riding through the recent rainstorms in the current Tour Of California event, some lowlife broke into the team van and stole a bunch of bikes, including Lance's $20,000 time-trials machine. And man, was he pissed. So angry that heard a rumor he was going to take out a personal ad for anyone spotting this bike to call him and he would deal with it himself. Probably won't happen, but as Mr. T used to say, "I pity the fools" if they ever get caught!

Probably Not!

Also, I would not trust the honesty of a pawn shop anyway...
He plans on making 200%+ profit on anything he buys.

With your Dog's Chip, the ASPCA it Trying to find the Owner...
Your stolen guitar is the exact Opposite.
