I never paid much attention to string brands or gauges until I started frequenting this site. Now that I spend more than ever before on guitars and 'accessories' (thanks a lot), I must admit Elixir PBs were a nice discovery.

But I keep trying to figure out what you guys mean when you start talking about .10s, .12s, .14s and so on. As in "I put a set of .12s on and I'll never use anything else!"

Soooo, what does that mean? I think I've figured out that it refers to the gauge or diameter of the smallest string (E). Right? But how does that translate to "putting a set of .10s on" when the other strings are all thicker? Does ".10s" imply super light starting with that gauge? Will a set of super light .10s always come with the rest of the strings in ascending order all having the same gauge?

When I say a set of 12's, I mean EJ16's, .012" to .053"... Which is what most people mean, I hope.

So yeah, people are talking about the gauge of the High E string.

And yeah, most string sets move to the progressively thicker strings in a relatively standard manner.

Unless people are using custom sets...
(Then the Low E sting might be anything from .042" to .057" depending on what weird set someone may be using! )
