I remember a detective show from the 70s, where the guitarist was murdered by electrocution from his guitar. And recently when I was trying to learn about various pickups I read somewhere that active pickups are safer than passive as there is less electrocution risk should there be a short somewhere. So is this risk for real? Is it safe to play barefoot? In the rain? With green eggs and ham?

I don´t know about guitars, but mics are dangerous. Especially for karaoke singers.

The bass player in FlySig's gig seemed to have no problem pulling it off ;)

I would play barefoot in the rain,
I would play barefoot on a train,
It shouldn't kill you when you jam,
Just alittle tingle, Sam I am! :D

Which detective show? Columbo? McMillan & Wife? Charlie's Angels? (I think I saw that episode)

The voltage has been stepped-down before it travels down your cable.
To what I am not sure... 12 volts? 9v? 3v?
Anyway, even 120 volts shouldn't kill you. It would just get your attention!

My high school rockin' buddies 'The Ewings' (Brothers) were on stage and when one of them stepped on a brass fitting in the floor barefoot, he got a tingle and immediate 'ZZZZZZ!' over the speaker.
But that was more like static electricity.

[Mild enough that he said 'Whoa, Dude?!' then did it again  ]

I've had 'lip sizzle' before. In our climate it's just part of playing outside. Fortunately, the moustache takes the bulk of the burn, I think.

But what do I know? I took 8,000 volts once.
( and pissed the warden off by living.....)

If there's an electrical problem, there's a problem and being barefoot won't have a significant effect either way. As an electric player, who's played outdoors a lot.. after awhile, the tingle you get from holding a guitar and touching a mic (when the system isn't grounded properly which was ALWAYS the case) starts to feel kinda nice.

Both she and her sister go barefoot, but the bassist is standing and more active so it is more apparent.

If you haven't yet, everyone should visit their Myspace. Myspace.com/bynow00 . They have some fun songs and a nice style.

Just for you, Crimson... ;) notice where they leave their shoes.

;) the brackets were bs, the volts weren't!
...but it was only a 1/4 amp, so it just burned a lot of hair.

and caused a major personality shift for about 3 months. It's interesting to
really walk in someone elses shoes a while.....

I got lit by 800 volts once. Sent me across the room. Working on a Black Cat linear amp and holding a D-104 microphone when the voltage test lead un-clipped from the transformer tang and landed on the chassis. I was working on it at my desk in my bedroom at the time, and the only thing that saved me was when I went over the bed (cleared it completely I was told) it pulled the amp off the desk disconnecting it from the power. Woke up at the doctors office, don't know how long I was out, but it was at least 30 minutes to the doctors house from mine. I guess I was breathing, just not conscious. I was 15.

On the DVD "Remember That Night" by David Gilmour
he was talking about the dangers of playing on wet stages.

He said what they used to do to check was touch the guitar strings on the microphone.

Apparently one time Roger(Waters) did this and it burned the strings clean off his bass.

My recollection is that there were a few guitar players from rock bands electrocuted during 60s or 70s.

OK, here is the "Straightdope" answer:

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2106/is-playing-the-electr...

(BTW, I'm still a newbie, I've searched and searched and can't find out how to make the link say something cool like "straightdope" - help anyone?)

And here is what a "master electrician" says:

http://www.guitarnuts.com/technical/electrical/safety/index.php

I particularly like the advice to "not use your body as a piece of test equipment". I guess you're supposed to use the drummer.

But if you go to wikipedia you'll find a list of the causes of death of rock stars, and guess what cars, drugs, alcohol, planes and heart attacks are far more dangerous ...

It's pretty automatic if you are in the "Full Reply Form" Mode. You select the URL button and a window pops up asking for the URL. After inserting the URL, a second pane pops up and says "Now enter the title of the Web page you wish to referenece" - that's where you put whatever title you want to use. Here's an example:

World\'s Best Guitars

If you like typing long cryptic information, you can do the same thing "manually" in the basic reply form, but the simple way is to use the "Full Reply Form" button. Either way, you can "Preview Post" to make sure it looks like you want…

Hope that helps…

ScottMt, that second link is very good at explaining the technical side of the issue.

The author suggests carrying a circuit tester to every gig. People, those testers are cheap and they are so easy a Caveman could use one. They look like a big plug. You plug it in and look at the LED display. Red is bad, green is good.

I also did not realize that GFCI extenstion cords were available. That sounds like a good idea too.
