Former Monkee Peter Tork Diagnosed With Cancer
BY ERIC R. DANTON | The Hartford Courant
9:06 AM EST, March 5, 2009

Peter Tork has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, the former Monkees guitarist and singer announced Tuesday on his website.

Tork, 67, said he has a slow-growing form of head and neck cancer, Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. Although it is most frequently found in the salivary glands, Tork's cancer was discovered on the lower region of the tongue.

"It's a bad news, good news situation," Tork says on the website. "It's so rare a combination (on the tongue) that there isn't a lot of experience among the medical community about this particular combination. On the other hand, the type of cancer it is, never mind the location, is somewhat well known, and the prognosis, I'm told, is good."

Tork, who was part of the first class to graduate from E.O. Smith High School in Mansfield, underwent surgery Wednesday.

An actor and a musician, Tork was part of the made-for-TV Monkees from 1966-68, and has participated in occasional reunions. The Mansfield resident currently fronts Shoe Suede Blues, and says he fully intends to be ready for the band's next gig, in Manchester June 6

I don`t care what anybody says the monkeys were a good band. Well they had good songs. Trader said Davy Jones was kinda cute.

Here's a bit of Monkee trivia for you.

Steven Stills was going to be one of the Monkees, but his good friend Peter Tork got the job instead.

Don't know all the details, but that's the gist of the story.

Here's a bit more:

The historic Ed Sullivan Show in which the Beatles first appeared also featured the cast of Oliver! as one of the other acts (I know - there were other acts?).

Playing the Artful Dodger in that cast: Davy Jones.

What are the odds?

Quite a few "Artful Dodger" actors moved on to musical fame, including Davey Jones, Steve Marriott and Phil Collins

One more bit of trivia - the opening act for The Monkees on their 1967 tour? Jimi Hendrix.
