You don't want to see ANY red segments on meters, especially in a digital system. If the meters are into the red then you've ran out of headroom and the signal is clipped. You should aim for peaks to be hitting no more than +6dB with a further 6dB headroom available. Running square-wave signal into PA lousdpeakers not only sounds unpleasant but it can be expensive too, as it's the best way to fry voicecoils.

Meters are there for a good reason. Get the gain structure right throughout and the whole system works more efficiently and sounds better, and you won't run the risk of blowing speakers.

You made a good point about matching outputs to inputs. It's important to understand the differences between output/input impedances and whether the gear operates at mic-level or line level.
