Location: Montana | OK, I was in a hurry and I tried to log in to the OFC and Firefox or Windows asked for permission to open a .cgi file from ultimatebb or something and asked to associate the file type with Firefox and so without thinking I hit OK. And then it tried to open a bazillion different tabs. So now I can't log in to the OFC with that computer.
So on to the home computer and it logs in as normal to the OFC. And when I go into Firefox - Tools - Options - Applications to see what program is associated to cgi files on my home computer - it does not list .cgi as a type. But it works.
So I'm befuddled. Any ideas? |

But Here is a definition of a CGI file.
You will notice the many warnings about opening executable files. :eek:
Now... What to do about it?
Go back to that computer look at the bottom of your start menu.
At the bottom there should be an arrow for All Programs>
In All Programs should be a thing that sez Accessories>
Which should open another draw-down menu which will have System Tools>
In that little menu there should be a button for System Restore.
There you can restore your computer to the day before you clicked that cgi file.
Maybe...
This is only if you have Windows... Go here for more detailed instructions. :p

| Aurthur, Just how old are you anyway? You've helped me (and others) load photo's into threads from one site to another and that was awful nice of you to do by the way. Your quite computer literate for someone who calls himself an "Old Man" I am impressed, I always thought Old Guy's were just.....well.......Old.

Location: Montana | Thanks OMA, that would have worked under normal circumstances. But the problem was - Malware :mad: Those people should be hung from their thumbs or other appendages! Anyway, I purged it and now the problem is gone. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | So Sorry. The chick down the hall toasted her laptop with some of that stuff. See ran one of those 'Free Virus Scan' thingies, and it told her she had '237 viruses' and that they would fix it for her for $39!
Everywhere she goes, that pop-up window keeps... well, popping-up.
I tried to get to system restore on her's but it has closed access to that. Even from 'My Computer'.
Evil Stuff. :eek: :mad:
She took her laptop out to some geek shop, I don't know if they fixed it.
If I ever have to 'wipe' my computer, I'd be pissed.
I got 100GB of crap on here... Lessons (that I need to study), music, movies, letters, all that crap. |

| Mine crashed about a year ago and I hadn't backed everything up. I couldn't get into the computer but I was able to pick the important files off the crashed hard drive by installing it into a remote box and then using another computer to copy the files - that eliminated the risk of losing everything on the OS reinstall.
I ended up having to reload the OS and all programmes, drivers etc. A real PIA and it was days before everything was sorted out. Would have been more cost efficient to just have Dell send a new one to my door for 300-400 or whatever they charge.
In addition to backing up I'd suggest using Spybot, CrapCleaner and a good Virus checker with a firewall. I've used AVG freeware virus scanner for years and no problems. |
