So who has modified or upgraded pickups in their Storm series, and what has worked for you well?

I have this 12-string (Hurricane?) coming in that is going to need at least one new pickup, and I probably will just swap out for a whole new set. Any really good suggestions?

I changed from the stock vibrato to a Bigsby which was a big improvement. Once the original pickups were wax-potted the work fine and sound good. Kinda like a cross between an ES335 and a Gretch 6120.

The only problem with changing pickups on the storms is like all Ovation's pickups they are an odd size. They don't even match to the later Ovation pickups used on the Viper/Preacher/UK2 etc. So not you only do you have to change the pickups you also need to change the mounting rings, and enlarge the cutouts in the top.

There maybe some Artec pickups that with a little modifaction would work in the existing mounting rings. Master Woody might be able to shed some light on that.

One possible option would be a set of "Dog-Ear" P90's. Also check out the TV Jones Filtertron replicas.

I have a full new-in-box original electronics kit for a storm if you are interested. Pickups, controls, 3-way, jack, mounting rings, etc. Right from the factory. Let me know if you're interested in it.

Is your Hurricane a wide neck or narrow?

Don't know on the nut width yet, since I just won the auction yesterday, but it really looks like a narrower width for a 12-string. The neck to head joint is slightly odd looking IMO for a normal 12-string Ovation neck.

Here\'s the ebay page

Also, you have a PM about the pickups...

Andrew, if it is the standard 1-11/16ths nut, I'll be curious to read your comments. I find 12 strings on a narrow neck very difficult to play cleanly. Your fretboard fingering technique has to be nearly perfect. I cannot switch from a 6-sting to the Hurricane without about 15 minutes adjustment time. The strings are just too close together. I guess my technique is just too sloppy to make the transition quickly.

ProfBB is lucky - my fretting technique has the accuracy of a shotgun, and I just had a miserable time playing that narrow nut. It was the best darn looking guitar that I couldn't play, though.

2nd that, Mitz. It was exactly as you described it . . . could've been stashed under the bed and left unforgotten for 35 years.

Gee, it sounds like the perfectly-sized 12-string for my size 4 1/2 fingers; I didn't know there was anything made that narrow with the extra strings......someday, I'd really like to try one.

Okay, so starting out with a NOS electronics kit, is it possible to wire the standard internals like the T-head with the split phase on the 3-way, with 1V, 2T, and the blender?

The short answer is no. You'd need to source a pan-pot for the pickup blend. You might be able to do the in-phase/out-of-phase/standby with a standard toggle. It's a while since I've worked on electric guitar circuits, I'd need to draw a schematic to be certain.

Woody used a pan pot on my Viper, so I'm sure I could get one. Bigger question for me is whether I could handle doing the in/out phase toggle properly.

I once wired a bakery mixer on 220v/3ph. Worked great...except it turned backwards. Amazing what crossing your wires will do.

Doesn't someone have a site with old Ovation electric diagrams?

For the immediate I'd take Dave up on his offer then start your learning curve on intoning and setting up a Hollow Body... :D
