I have a friend who was going to the Tate party that night. The person he was escorting canceled at the last minute.
Kinda like missing a doomed flight.

Back in the '60s, some then-hippie friends with a VW bus picked up a guy hitchiking and drove him from SF to LA. They were happy to get rid of Charlie because he never shut up from the moment they picked him up until they left him off. You guessed it, they were watching the news six months later . . . and there he was, 'Charlie' Manson. They said he really tried to talk them into joining his group out in the desert, but they declined.

Read Helter Skelter. Bugliosi did an incredible job of prosecution in this case, and he wrote the book to document the effort. I was in college in LA during the trials and remember seeing the young "family" girls sitting on the curb outside the Los Angeles Criminal Courts Building. By the time I started working in the federal court building across the street, the trial was over.

A perfect example of how people are basically sheep. Or at least enough people are, that people like this lunatic can easily find them and influence them beyond sanity. .... that and a good supply of drugs. and you've got any cult mentality at it's basic form.

there was a time when religion was said to be the opiate of the people.
Now I believe it is organized sports.
