How does everyone feel about Ovation's iDEA guitar?

Does anyone here have one? If so, what have been your experiences?

Do a 'search', there's been dozens of threads about the iDEA. I own one (the pre-amp, not the guitar) and use it a lot.

Also go look at www.ideafordummies.com

Sorry, I didn't realize that you could just have an iDEA pre-amp. The only thing I've seen was the guitar itself.

The pre-amp ala carte is about $300. The guitar with pre-amp already in it is about $600.

If you already have an Ovation with an Oval preamp in it (NOT OP4BT) you can get the iDea module and swap them out.
It will directly swap with the OP-Pro. On other things, like the OP-20 or OP-30 or OP-40 or 50, you can remove the can and install the can that is include with the iDea module....

Go to iDea for Dummies.com for more great information.

I cannot say I was overwhelmed by the sound of the guitar unpluged.

The workmanship of the one at the local Guitar Center is disappointing for a $600 guitar. Al can get you just the preamp for a good price, better than the advertised list price.

If it were me and I wanted the iDea preamp, I'd buy a good USA made Elite or Balladeer with OpPro series preamp. Then I'd buy the iDea preamp from Al and drop it in. A used but good condition guitar and the iDea from Al might even cost less than the iDea guitar and it would be vastly better.

It's Ovations best preamp, packaged with Ovations worst guitar. Interesting combo.

One dealer does the right thing, he sells higher end guitars both import and USA made Ovations, with the iDEA preamp already installed in them. Quick ebay check he's got the Koa Celeb CSE34, Ultra 1578, USA Elite, USA Custom Elite, and USA Legend all with standard iDEA preamp. More Ovation dealers should do the same (maybe they already do).

I'm glad that the pre-amp comes separate. I wasn't impressed with the sound of the guitar that was featured in the YouTube clip.

The iDea guitar hits the mark they were aiming for. I know that TheMadOne here has one, and it has survived the Rochester NY winter. Is it a great guitar? What do you think for $300 (netting out the preamp)? But it is pretty cool, and unlike just moving the preamp to another guitar, it does have the additional jack built into the guitar. In person, the iDea guitar looks pretty rad, with a very unique Platinum finish on the top and the neck and headstock lip. Everything else is blacked out (tuners, binding, saddle, headstock) and it has the offset surfboard holes in the upper bout. The fit and finish was just fine for a low priced Chinese guitar. And it really doesn't sound bad, especially when compared with the other POS Chinese guitars in the price point .... and I'd venture to say no better and no worse than the vast majority of the celebrity line. But you do get what you pay for, and in this case, you are really paying for the preamp. All in all, this is a great guitar for a college or high school kid ... it's got all the slick electronics and songrwriter features in a guitar that is built to withstand the type of abuse that a guitar can be subjected to by this demographic in general. As I said, I think it hits the mark dead on for where Ovation wanted to position the guitar.

Well said!

Plus, I'm guessing that they figured that all the Ovationistas would already have a guitar that they could just drop-it-in.

Or the knowledge to change it all out... Or the change to pay someone else to do it for them.

Thanks folks. Good info as I was thinking about one. Now I know to do the swap out thing.
