Yesterday was 80 degrees. Today we are getting a blizzard. They say it's going to be pretty bad. Over a foot of snow, 60 MPH winds, whiteout conditions and power outages. It isn't supposed to end until around 6PM tomorrow. I'll be going home soon and probably won't be back 'til Wednesday. I will be working on a new song that I'm writing, checking on my elderly neighbor periodically, and thinking about all that I am missing here. It's times like these that I think it would be worth paying for DSL at the house too, but if the powere's out it wouldn't matter anyway. See ya'll in a couple of days.

Whoa! Go home. Get the fire going. Get candles in case the electricity goes. Have blankets. Put batteries in flash light and radio. You'll be fine.

Also, if DSL comes over the phone lines, and the power grid goes out, but you have a generator, can you still get DSL? Just wondering.

If the power goes out cuz the telephone poles fell down, you loose your phone.
If the power goes out because of a blown transformer, you May still have phone service.

I'm baaack. Ow, my baaack! We didn't get hit nearly as hard as they said we would, but I hurt my back shoveling. I got up yesterday and the back door was frozen shut. I tried to kick it open and hurt my foot. Finally I went out the front door and shoveled my way around, but hurt my back. I took it as a sign that I wasn't supposed to leave the house, so I spent the day alternately lying down and walking around the house. I couldn't sit comfortably so I didn't play guitar. Just walked and read, then napped and groaned. I'm here today but not too comfortable. I HATE getting old!

Yeah, Rapid got a lot more snow than we did and heavy winds. Deadwood got 30 inches. We here in the southern Hills only got 5 inches of heavy wet snow. The wind blew like crazy BEFORE the snow hit, so we had no drifting or power outages. Nebraska got tornadoes, and we did have some pretty intense thunder and lightening with the snow. All in all Hot Springs dodged another bullet. Now they say we may get more tomorrow. :(

We didn't get hit nearly as hard as they said we would,
This is my frantic weatherman rule of thumb....
Say they predict 4 to 8 inches of snow. Take the lower number and divide by two. Many more times than not, that's what you get.

It's even harder to predict the weather here than it was in New England. Last summer they came across the screen with a warning about baseball sized hail falling at Cold Brook (which is about a mile or so from my shop), and heading for downtown Hot Springs. The sirens went off, and my student ran for his car (to put it under a bridge) while I flipped the sign and raced home (less than a mile) to get mine in the garage. We got about 30 seconds worth of marble sized hail, then the sun came out.
