Do you tend to play closer to the bridge for that punchy sound or closer to the neck for a smoother sound?

Depends on how much the slipperly little bugger is moving on my lap :) (I like closer to the neck)

I change up the position depending on the song/style of music, etc.

Closer to the neck??

I always play ON the neck. Did you mean the nut?

If that's the case, then bvince has already given my answer.

My palm is always on or just in front of the bridge for muting. Not sure if that answers your question. I have to vary this position slightly when I play a Strat because my finger positioning can interfere with the volume knob. When the guitar goes dead, I know I've inadvertently turned down the volume. It happens to others as well. This is why we occasionally see Strats being played with a missing volume knob.

I use the nails of two fingers to support my left hand. With the raised rosette on the old Legend I get "pushed" down toward the bridge to avoid bumping and clicking. With the Adamas i've installed a broad clear pickguard so I can play anywhere. On that axe I tend toward the neck: a warmer tone.
