Hi, here's the deal, my 15 yo and his buds would like to play a few songs for a father/daughter dance with a 50s theme. Poodle skirts etc. I was not a scentient being at that time and although I did watch a lot of "Happy Days" as a child the only songs I can think of are Rock Around the Clock and Splish splash. So any suggestions for songs in the genre that would appeal to teenagers and be jitterbuggable?

Stick with the top hits. Just click on the years and see which ones you recognize. Chances are the audience will recognize them also.

do a google search for #1 hits and wikipedia will pull up a pretty decent cross reference chart.

PS I was just barely a scentient being during that time. You make it sound like the stoneage.

I know about this music because during the 50's and 60's they had recording devices.

Well I'm just barely scentient still ... lots of scents but little sense.

Runaround Sue by Dion is a great jitterbug song.

Sleeping With The Enemy has a scene with Julia Roberts & the guy she meets, dancing the jitterbug to it.

Rock around the Clock - isn't that the default for jitterbug?

Play a I-vi-IV-V chord progression underneath a medley of a half dozen or so popular melodies from that era. There's hundreds to choose from. The soundtrack from American Graffiti would be an excellent place to start.

Good stuff here, thanks. The challenge is finding stuff that appeals to teenagers. It helps if their is a connection to something they know like a movie. Last night we worked on Johnny B Goode, those guitar riffs are timeless, and there's the classic scene in Back to the Future where Michael J Fox takes off on the Chuck Berry lead and then it morphs into Van Halen type stuff. American Graffiti and the Buddy Holly Story are in our movie queue now.
