I think any serious player would just change strings for $6 rather than use some "cleaner".
Of course I'm no serious player, and I know this is goofy, but near the end of my strings life I'll use a little WD-40 on a rag and wipe each string individually.....seems to give them some new life for awhile.

I just wash my hands before use and wipe the strings down with a damp rag after. Sweat seems to be the string killer.

I was given a bottle of the stuff....don't even remember the name. Tried it a couple of times, and really noticed no difference.

I am guessing it is just some sort of mineral spirits from the smell of it. It does remove some of the crud that builds up from dirt on your hands and sweat, but just didn't notice the "new string" sound return at all.

I've found it to be more effective when used in conjunction with string tubes...

I sent my strings to Jeff to be cleaned but they have not been returned yet.

I've used Ernie Ball disposable string cleaners. I don't know if they do anything at all, but they smell good.

The best way is the old-fashioned way.
Remove the strings from the guitar...
(carefully pulling the curly-cue ends through the Ovation pin-less bridge)
Boil the strings, and look at all that disgusting crap that floats to the top.
Restring the guitar, being careful again with the curly-cue ends.
Do this weekly.

This thread takes me back to my life before coated strings.
Very unpleasant memories.
I've mentioned before, something about my chemical makeup is hazardous to bronze. Prior to 1994 or so, I changed strings every other show.
D'Addario loved me.

I tried everything... washed my hands after every set, wiped the strings after every song, baby powder, string boiling (it works-- but it's less practical when you tie-lock your strings) Zildjian cymbal cleaning rag's (works really well)... what a hassle it all was.

I still wash my hands... still compulsively wipe my strings... but coated strings are a life saver for chemically challenged players like me.

If I ever make it to an OFC gathering, guess you guys won't let me touch your guitar's now.

I tend to approach the subject from a different angle. I wash my hands and apply an Avon product called "Silicone Glove" to may hands. Within 30 seconds my hands have a thin, dry, smooth coat of something that keeps my hand oils from coming off onto the guitar/strings. I also apply "String Ease" to the strings periodically with a soft rag. Another possibility is Gojo hand cleaner (without the pumice). That stuff immediately takes off grease, oil, and whatever else your hands leave behind. (I also use it to clean my steering wheel)

I tried Dunlop 65 string clear.
It seems to work.

I play a lot of 12's so it gets pricy to change them.
