I'm looking for opinions. I intend to purchase either an Ovation 2006 Koa Collectors model or a 2007 BCS Collectors model. They appear to be very similar. They only differences I see are (1) Koa top vs. Bear Claw Spruce top, (2) Fretboard inlays on the 2007 vs. no inlays on the 2006, and (3) Flamed maple epaulet on the 2006 vs. spaulted maple on the 2007.

To me, the type of maple for the epaulet is not a factor. The fretboard inlays are desired, but not critical. But obviously, the KOA vs BCS may have a dramatic difference on the sound quality. I've never owned a koa instrument. Does anyone have experience and opinion on either the virtues of koa vs. spruce tops, or on the sound quality of the the 2006 model vs. the 2007 model, specifically???

I have both. I would recommend getting both.

They are very similar in a lot of respects for example the contour bowl, the ebony fingerboard, low profile neck and cutaway chiefly.

However the main difference is the top.

The 07C is bright, open, clear voiced and loud.
The 06C is darker, warmer and more mellow.

On a side note I prefer guitars without fretboard markers, they look cleaner somehow and who on earth uses them anyhow. Use the markers on the side of the neck!!!

I ought to add, good choice. I've been through a lot of the collectors and the 06 and 07 stand out as the "best" for me. (Haven't had the pleasure of trying the 08 yet).

As they are so different you really do need one of each ;) The fact that they can both be had for $500 each is astonishing.

Tim, I have never had the opportunity to own or play either Guitar. But, in the last year or so if my memory serves me correctly, It seems that the 2007 gets the most postive comments. Remember though, its "personal preference".

Personally, I think the '05ES is the best wood topped Ovation ever made. But if you MUST have epaulets...?

Dweezil nailed it.

The only thing I have to add is that there is at least one more difference between the two guitars. The 07C has the 5 piece neck as opposed to the 06C's solid mahogany neck.

As for which one to get. Since you already have spruce top Ovations I'd say go for the 06C. If it was gonna be your only guitar I'd recommend the 07C. Whichever one you go with you'll love it. As Dweezil pointed out, however, getting both would be best (all the best people have ;) ).

The only one i`ve played is the 06. If you like bass thats the one. Neck felt good, nice looking guitar. Looks better in person than in pics. The 07 is more to my taste as far as looks go and everybody thats owns one seems to love it.

Thanks, everyone. Those suggestions reinforce the impressions I got on my own. And, yes, I certainly would like to have both; but only one is feasible at this time. Since I expect to play it in public a lot, and I'm partial to bright and clear guitar tones, I decided the spruce '07 model would suit me better. It will be my first model with a Contour back. I'm looking forward to that.

Just when I think, "I finally have all the guitars I've been wanting," I go and learn about the 2006 model...

The 07 is pretty nice - played one the other day at GC. Have you tried 70's Legends or GCs? For less money I think they are better than the 07.

There seem to be less 06's around. I had one once (go ahead, I'll wait till you're done laughing) .........................

. It was a beautiful guitar with a better sound than I anticipated. I think Slydog still has it. Didn't seem to me to have that much of a different "dark" sound, but the wood is TDF.
