Just noticed that the 1681 had a few changes over the years, mine is a 1982 with a two knobber preamp, I've seem other with a OP24 (guess) and a different type of textured top (the '82 has lines on the top the '93 has kinda dimples).

Has anyone done any comparisions between the versions?

Mine is a '98 and has an Optima Preamp. Mine does have gold sparkles.
The 'lines' are not as pronounced as on yours and I don't have the Adamas medallion on the back.
Mine also does not have a snot-blob that I can see. (And that don't break my heart, either)

I would like to add that your funky blue one is awfully purdy, even with the snot blob! :p

Thanks. Now I ***KNOW*** this is personal opinion but just wondering if these are really subtle differences that don't have a HUGE effect on the tone etc.

The top on mine feels sort of 'thick', are the later ones thinner, in terms of thickness and therefore more vibrant/louder/zingyer...

Interesting. I've just compared the 1881 ('93 ish) and the neck profile is slimmer than the '82 1681 plus the top is the dimpled type.

Despite it being a SSB it's actually more 'open' voiced than the 1681 and more like the sound I'm after.

So are later 1681s more like the later 1881 in terms of character (aside from the depth of bowl of course).

I'm starting to think a later 1581 is what I need - AAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH it's deep, slippery slope! But fun :)

Dweez,

I have the 1581-7 you need and it can be yours. :)

Killer guitar.

Let me know and I will stop the auction.

Check the classifieds.

Mine's an 83 deep bowl, medallion at the heel. Subtle lined top. Came as a two knober, factory OP-24 install 94ish.
I wouldn't change a thing about the way it sounds.

There were quite a lot of different Adamas I/II versions, even though the model numbers didn't change. I tried to compare the textured tops in another thread, look here.

Some major changes were:

- 2-knobber to OP-24 preamp in the serial# 4000 to 4500 range

- OP-24 to Optima preamp somewhere around serial# 10000

- Early Adamas II guitars (ca. #1200 to #1800) had a plastic ring binding instead of fibre ring.

Adamas I/II guitar changes I've seen so far relate to bowl color and construction, label, bracing, Schaller M6 Mini or M6 standard tuner, tuner with Ovation logo or Schaller logo, amount of sparkles on top and bowl, epi look, strap knob color and type, neck profile and finish, Adamas lettering or none, lettering on access door or close to heel, lettering with medallion and without, location of access door. I'm sure there are many more which I've never realized.

The epis varied in thickness but I don't think the top itself. But I can be wrong.

Mine is eboney finger board optima and dull finish on neck. I had it refinished.

So you sent a regular 1681 to Mother and had an ebony neck put on?

Dweez, the 1581 is a nice partner to the 1881, both in black. These serve as a couple of go-to guitars for my regular gig.

I'm just not a fan of the walnut fretboard.

Nope the ebony orginal.
The high glass finish was done on the back of a neck
and headstock

Any reason why?

Just curious. On the last custom guitar I ordered I almost pulled the trigger on a brazilian neck and bridge but chickened out at the last minute (cost notwithstanding) and went with the standard ebony.

It's just that of all the Ovations/Adamas I've played, the ones I like have ebony fingerboards, not because they have ebony fingerboards they just happen to have ebony fingerboards if that makes sense.

I don't know why.
