Apparently if you leave a Rainsong or other graphite guitars out in the heat, the neck melts.

http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152968

An interesting thing I notice when people talk about Composite Acoustics vs. Rainsong, is that there is always a comment that CA "sounds more like wood" than Rainsong.

But if you were to mention the sound of Ovation guitars, which actually have wood in them, people react as if you have fallen out of your tree or something.

And don't play a black guitar in direct sunlight. It gets REAL uncomfortable real fast. Don't ask how I know that.

I have noticed that at AGF many times. They seem to have a severe bias towards all wooden or all composite guitars. Any hybrid is "not a real guitar". Adamas is OK though. Go figure.

Well I think that if Ovation had sponsored the AGF, the tone toward Ovation guitars would change dramatically. ;) JMHO, of course.

I only have one real guitar but I play my ovations all the time anyway. :) .

Heat is an enemy to any composite or wood anything. Wood will expand, contract, dry out and warp. If epoxy is used in either construction heat will break it down. The faster the cure rate the faster it will break down. I own a wood shop and we are very careful about our climate control, wood just moves too much. If we have to break an epoxy joint we just heat it up.

Good point Michelle.

The group over there in general is more biased that a lot of guitar forums primarily because of the way they are moderated. Al and Miles keep this forum in check and it definitely provides a fun and more relaxed atmosphere.

I find the AGF a fun and interesting read most of the time but rarely post.

That is completely untrue. I owned a CA cargo that I left in the trunk of my car while visiting Disney, because we couldn't get in to the motel that early. It sat there from about 9am to 5pm in July in Florida. (it gets pretty hot here) When we finally checked in, I took the guitar up to the room and pulled it out of the gigbag. It was almost too hot to touch, but was still in tune with no problems. Those things are indestructible.

Well that's what the poster at the AGF claimed, not me. I just was foolish enough to repeat what he said.

Heck, I bought a crappy Memphis guitar from one of my brother's friends fo4 $50.00 (including the amp!). That guitar had a warped neck, although I didn't realize it when I bought it.

If this was true, then I wonder why all those high-priced carbon fiber do-dads don't melt off the racer-replica motorcycles on which they're typically installed? There is no question that they're exposed to some pretty extreme heat in around those engines, brake rotors and calipers, and exhaust systems.

Hey, it was just a luthier's attempt to explain something of which he had no concept!

That's all... Now just move along... There's nothing to see here...

Beyond the fact that I think that most of these people are talking outta their butts...
If you want a guitar that "sounds more like wood" why not buy a Wooden Guitar!?!

My Academy doesn't sound like wood either... I wonder why?

Welcome Mike! :)

I've been told that is true, even with an all laminate guitar.

Too much heat will damage any guitar.

I actually got some conflicting advice when I got my guitar. Some thought that laminates were like Pergo flooring -- nothing can destroy them, since laminates are not "really" wood.

But then I heard that even laminates are subject to heat and cold damage, so I decided to be safe than sorry and not leave my guitar in my trunk for any really long length of time.

Not sure about the New finishes, but sudden temperature changes will probably still crack the finish.
I have seen enough Celebrity's on evilBay with finish cracks.
(And now that I think about it, I think that my long-gone CC255 had a little one)

Also, I'm sure too much moisture will cause them to swell then 'delaminate' and peel.
Too much heat can loosen the epoxy on the dove-tail neck-joint of Celebrity's.
That is how Eliot Meldoy told me to take-apart a CS257.

The binding on my Academy has seen better days, I don't know What someone did to that!
You can destroy any guitar if you try hard enough.

Laminates are not like flooring. They will be destroyed by heat too. If those people want to destroy their guitars by leaving them in hot cars, let them. If someone wants to jump off a cliff let them.
