Joined: October 2005 Posts: 11 | I am hoping someone can help me. I have a 1998 Collectors and the Epaulet are starting to lift up a bit. I want to repair this myself. Does anyone have any experience with this? What type of glue, how not to mess it up etc. All advice is welcome. Thanks, Steve

Cya won't harm the finish, so if you get any on the top just clean it with nail polish remover (acetone).

It's possible that it's dehydrated which can actually cause the edge to curl (as opposed to lift). Depending on how bad it is, you can even lay a lightly dampened cloth on the eppi with a little weight on top to encourage it to settle. If this flattens it out, tack it down with the super glue.

Put a single layer of masking tape on the top, maybe use an Xacto knife to trim it to the exact profile of where the edge of the epi meets the top. Also make sure the tape extends well away from that joint (or tape down craft paper to cover the top), because you sure as heck don't want to get epoxy on the finish. Apply a liberal amount of the epoxy to the underside of the epi and use a strong tape (e.g. duct tape) to hold it down onto the top, letting it cure for 24 hr before removing the tape. Clean any tape adhesive residue with naptha.

This is a relatively common occurance with the pickguards on old Martin guitars. I think they call it "potato chipping". But I really haven't seen it too much with Ovations. BTW, I remember being told some years back that the factory used Titebond to secure them.

I protected the top of the guitar with paper and masking take. I used a toothpick and carefully put Apoxy under the Eppie, not directly on the top of the guitar. I than used a small C-Clamp to hold in place. It came out next to perfect. Thanks for all the suggestions,
