I am considering purchasing either the Standard Balladeer 1861lx (with the shallow back) or the lengend 1777lx. Neither is available for me to try. Any opinions. I am a new player with not a lot of knowlege about guitars.

I'm with Iffy on this one. Go for the deeper bowl, or even better yet, try a contour bowl like my 2077LX.

Welcome Phillym!

If you are located in NJ there's no excuse not to join your fellow OFC Locals at a gathering and get introduced to a Guzzilion nice guitars in the process.

What Town are you in?
Maybe someone will adopt your cause!

Both of those that you mention are Center hole - you need to try some of the other flavors!!

So... PM me and tell me how much money you have and what address do I ship to :D

Welcome to OFC!

Agreed with all above. If you can't find a store just post where you are and someone probably can help you out. If it were new, I would go with the 2077. A very nice playing and sounding guitar. But... as Woody sort of hinted there are always a number of good guitars on the for sale board from trusted members who are probably more picky than you or I will ever be. They are usually set up nice and very easy to play.
All the guitars mentioned are very nice. (although for playing unplugged I would probably steer you away from a shallow bowl)

Welcome. There are as many preferences as there are guitars. I prefer deep bowls. Others prefer shallow. That's why they make different types. Check out the Official OFC Gathering thread and try to hook up with those guys. You'd get to try and listen to a bunch of different Ovations. Then it will just be a matter of having too many great guitars to chose from. And don't worry about your skill. They're all much better than me, but I still go to a gathering when I can. At least you can get a free concert.

Come to the OFC gathering on Saturday... there will be plenty of O's in attendence.

And welcome to the asylum!

Go back through the Official OFC Gathering thread. It's buried in the 5 pages, but you'll find it. Unfortunately for me, it's got to be much closer to you.

In my opinion since I was in the same boat as you about a month ago. If you mostly play unplugged the deep bowls have a brighter and warmer, louder tone
if you play mostly plugged in you may want the thinner bowls. I choose the deep contour bowl which seems to fit me better since I am a sit down player.
From what I understand the standard balladeer and a legend such as comparing the 2771lx to a 2077lx which is what I did will sound the same unplugged but the legend has more bling and the wood on the neck may last longer if you play it allot. The legend also has a few more features on the preamp.
I am happy with my purchase and know where a deal is on a 2771lx on ebay asking 999 he said he would sell it for 650.00 delivered and it is brand new with a OHSC. I did not want to invest in a more expensive guitar in case I do not play it much but now that I am playing every day I may pickup some higher end models. Go to the gathering and see what you like. I wish I was able to have done that but i will be on vacation
