Location: Michigan | Played a 1617 today. I was expecting it to sound as good or better than my 1767 but twas not the case. No belly rumble, kind of shallow sound. I have gone back through the archives and found a post indicating that the 1617s with the truss rod cover on the head are VT braced and not A braced as the Ovation site says and that the later ones with the bar access thought the body have the A bracing. This sound correct? And if so could this be why it does not put out like the 1767? I did a basic search and there were some posts from 2008 but the web site tells me they are not available and when I go to the 2008 archive they are not there. |

Location: SoCal | In 1970, Ovation went the VT-11 bracing for Legends. They lost a lot of bass when they did that, going instead for mid range and treble. A lot of us don't like them but some do (Dobro has a VT braced Legend that he swears by -=- it's a very personal choice.
In 1976, Ovation came out with A braced tops for Custom Legends which gave the guitars much more bass response. It filtered thru several different Legends (Custom Legends, Patriot, the 1651 Lennon, etc). It or around 1980, all Legends became A braced and at about the same time, the K-bar was phased in (so you know if the guitar doesn't have a truss rod cover it's got a K-bar and has an A braced top).
I personally think that the A braced Legends (deep bowls, good wood on the top) are some of the best sounding wood topped Ovations ever built.

Location: Boise, Idaho | Rich, I'm not going to argue with Moody. I noticed that when I did a search in the archives, the posts I found didn't necessarily match the year of the archive. I think that all posts in threads that carry over from one year to the next might be in the archive for the year the thread ended. Try the same search in a couple different years and see what you come up with. |

Location: SoCal | Also, don't trust what's on the Ovation webpage. Especially when it comes to the timeline info and the arhives, it's notoriously incorrect. You want info on old models? Go to http://www.ovationtribute.com and search out info from the old catalogs. Jerome's done an incredible job there and what you read from the catalogs is much more reliable than Ovation's page..... |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Just look inside and see if it's A braced. It's about the only one you can clearly descern just by glancing at an angle at the soundhole. |

Location: Michigan | Thank for all the replies. I did not even think about the bracing to tell you the truth after lookin at the O website. I just assumed it was A braced. Only when I got back did I do a little research to find it might not be. Never thought to look. It could have been the strings but I don't think that was all of it. It was not a bad guitar by any means, just not on par with my legend. |
